BRITISH COTTONS IN
CHINA.
The persistence of business for; China after many months of activity, is one of the notable and highly satisfactory, features of the cotton trade. The tide is not flowing strongly, but it is flowing, and the ebb has met set in. Buying for Shanghai: and offer centres began in Manches. ter about the time of the Chinese New
Year, in Ferary, 1919 and except during one or two brief inter vals it has continued ever since. The start was made at a moment that was highly favourable. Prices had not recovered from the decline which followed the Armistice, and in com- parison with the prices which have ruled since wereextremely low. Early! delivery could be secured, and ship i ping facilities had improved. Helpec by the rise in the value of the tael business has gone on steadily and has frequently been on a big scale. Large quantities of cloth and mode-: rate lots of yarn have been bought. and substantial commitments are stilt an order, and to these almost daily additions are being made. The Board of Trade returns afford striking evidence of what has been happen- ing: while in the early part of the! year experts to China, including! Hongkong, were small-in. February they were under 4,000,000 yard- they have since risen to an amount that is certainly very favourable, especially if they are regarded in the light of the fact that prices have all'i through been far above the war'! rance. From June to October, in- clusive, they have averaged 36,666,460 yards.
Apart from the liberal quantities of yarn and cloth which have been shipped to China there is the cheer- ing fact that the goods on arrival have gore rapidly into consumption. I would not be encouraging to Lancashire if they had simply been added to stocks. The supplies have arrived, and been sold as they the prices which
