THE QUESTION OF 130KKET.
The Chancellor of the Manchoerus Diocess, Dr. P. V., Smith, guva an important considered judgment affect. ing the-legality of rood beams in churches. It arose. upon the applice- tion of the rector and werdom of St. Chad's Church, Ladybuy, for # faculty to erect across the chancel arch of the church (in memory-of the late Mr. Ward, wife of the Rector, the Rev. E. B. Ward) a beam orna- mented with tracery and supporting. epon three poueseals a highly orna manted cross with a Agure of the Saviour thereon and figures of St. John and the Virgin Mary on either side, being, in fact, what is common- ly called the rood beam. It is the design of Mr. W. C. Hardisty, the architect of the church.
The Chancellor said the question of the legality or illegality of a crucifix with attendant figures erected between the nave and the chancell of a church: depended, in his opinion, on whether they could be tooked upon as simply architectural and artistic decorations: or whether they were in any way in ja tended as on were apparently capable of being treated as direct accessories. to worship.
