A belated despatch by Re Admirał Seymour describes the fght. which took place in the Caspian last May, between Bolshevik and British ships. Since the time that we first went to Baku we have kept a small squadron in the Caspian, and by that means we prevent the Bolsheviks, who hold Astrakhan and the region of the Lower Volga, from attacking Baku and obtaining oil (The war with the Bolsheviks, has always been very largely a struggle for the possession of the natural resources of the country. There are two points: of interest from the naval point of view. At the close of the war it was just becoming apparent that the cutting-out" operation, performed by fast motor boats, could be carried out with much greater success than anyone bad supposed. The Italians practised it against the Adriatic harbours of the Austriana; we have lately made a highly successful raid. of the same kind on Kronstadt, and in this Caspian fighting also we used the motorboat, with good results in
harbour of raiding the
Fort Alexandrovsk. The moral is, of course, that surprise
still sometimes be affected by the use of a hoary device under modern con. ditions searchlights, boots, and so' on, in this case-which had been thought to make it impracticable, The other feature of the fighting was the work of the seaplane, which had the sinking of the large des- troyer to its credit. The Bolsheviks had no aircraft, and the operation should be compared rather with the work of the aeroplanes in the regent fighting on the Afghan frontier.But It is one more illustration that in the warfare of the future the seroplane will be a principal, and often a deci eive, weapon. A FINANCIAL PIG.
The exchange value of our sover- eign abroad and its depreciated pur- chasing power at home remind one of an incident in which a witty Rusian clown, named Durow, figured at Petrograd some thirty years ago. He was giving a performance with a pig trained to various feats. At the man's command the animal tock up from the ground a number of Russian coins, including imperials and small copper coins. When, however, some rouble notes were thrown down the pig. refused to pick them up even though whipped. Great amusement was caused by this discriminating act, and it was intensified as a voice from the gallery cried to the clown: "You blocke head, if the Finance Minister could not raise the paper rouble in four months, how can you expect a 'pig to do it? Though a popular favour- ite, the clown received orders to leave the city at once..
