"BOLSHEVIKS" IN
ENGLAND.
{By A TRADE UNIONIST.)
"Bolsheviks are those men who want England to be a land At for heroes to live in. like what Lloyd George said it was going to be."
That was the definition of Bolshe- viks given by a working man speaker at an election meeting in Man- chester. It would be interesting 10 get at the reason why the workman, who was evidently an intelligent and sincere man, should make what on the face of it seems so extraordinary an assertion.
The result of the municipal election st which the statement was made is significant. There had been three conservative, councillors répresenting it for the last ten years, to-day it is represented by three socialists.. The whole of the election results have not been dechred yet, but up to date there have been.832 similar victories in England for the Socialist--and Labour parties. Where last week there were bet 45 Labour and Social- ist councillors on the London Coun- cils to-day there are 573, Labour having a clear majority or 13. London: Councils. In many towns Labour attacked every seat and won them all,, in every town they won substantial gains. Why is this? Perhaps this paragraph from the Manchester Even- ing Chronicle for November 3-the same day that the election results were. declared-will help to elucidate both the problem of the working-man's. definition of a Bolshevik, and the socialist gains in the Municipal Elec- tions.

press nowadays, except that it is not always a stable, but sometimes a barn, a disused hur, a shed, or even a tent in a Beld. At least they have got a place of their own," will be the com- ment upon it. They will not, be charged fifteen shillings a week for an small back-bedroom rented at Ave shillings and sixpence per week." was the criticism of a young 'demobilized saldier with two weand stripes_and_1. ther stated that by giving the major part of his wir gratuity, the fruit of four years' service in France and the East, he had been offered the "key" of a seven-shilling house."
It might be well-to consider the case of the young man who has a wife' and a 12 months' old baby a little carefully, and then. see if there is any cause for wonder in the steady swing of the working classes towards the extreme left. He with his thou- sands of fellow soldiers had, to put it even mildly a very rough time in Flanders and elsewhere on his coun try's service. He was promised a new England as the fruit of his cour age and endurance. He has got it, an England worse for him than it ever was before,
The denunciations of those fetid slums that made a C3 nation in phy. sique by the politicians sound a little hollow. in the returned soldiers' cars to-day, when ever à miserable hovel in a slum can only be achieved by handing over to some shameless house agent the bulk of his unspent war gratuity. The returned soldier be- lieves, and with some show of reason, that advantage was taken of his ab- sence more effectually to rob and ex- ploit him or his return. He is show. "ng his resentment at the ballot box.
