We all laughed, and carried on because it was one of those pieces of unwritten etiquette; in an officers' mess. which we never observed, that
shop should never be introduced. Good enough, we always said, in the ald days when officers had to live together year after year, and activa service was only a pleasant dreami But we were only temporaries": everything was new to us, and there was not a minute to lose. The Ittle bit if "shop" we discussed on night might be put to the life-and- death test by one of us the next morning, and if you had something; to discuss you discussed it straight away,
THE BEST TALK OF ALL
But in any case, why this dislike of "shop" in everyday life? For "talker ing shop" means that men are talk ing of the things they know most abcut, and are most interested in. If it happens that you are an outsider, and cannot take a hand in the cob

talked "shop" in my bearing all the way. Once they stopped, and cae of them said to me, Not very in teresting to you, I'm afraid I breathlessly begged them to carry on, and passed my tobacco pouch for I was in a new and wonderful world, in which the only things that mattered were the ability of a pro peller shaft to stand up to its work. when all hope seemed to have gone up the funnel, or the sudden crash on a rock that the charts know nothing about.
Some "shop," of course, is better than others, but all is good, and it I had the chance of hearing shoppy, talk to-night from a rat-catcher or a king, it would be very hard to make a choice.
I came back to the same thing every man talks best on the thing be is thost' interested in, and as all talk which helps us to understand on another is good, so "shop" is the best talk of all-Daily Chronicle.

and that, in any case, he will cerga tainly pay them a visit in March next.i
The last Inspection, says the Times of Ceylon, took place in 1914, when the beds did not look very promising although there were slight indies- tions of a fishery.
In the Ceylon Administration Report for 1914 Dr. Joseph Pearson wrote: "In my report to the Colonial Secretary dated April 7, 1914, I wrote as follows" It was a striking fact that, while in 1913
Cargo carried on through Elils of Lading Lam HONGKONG to BEIRA, DELAGUA BAY, DURBAN (Natal), EAST LONDON, PORT ELIZABETH Practically no oysters were found, DAPE TOWN direct or with transhipment at CALCUTTA and/or COLOMBO.

the 1914 inspection of the Mutta- waratu pearls revealed the presence of a considerable number, of ayatérs
sufficient oucleus, in ·tmy opinion, to produce. a large quantity of oysters in 1915, if the oysters attain maturity at the end of their first year, as I believe they do, and if currents, etc.. are favourable, to a dispersal of the larvae on favourable grounds. Hence I look forward to the 1915 inspection with considerable interest. Unfortunately owing to financial considerations there will be no inspections in 1915 and 1916, so that it will be impossible to follow up this most in'eresting point. Ishould have been prepared to find a marked' increase of young oysters in 1915- and probably a considerable spatfall in 1916 or 1917"
PA
It is possible, though not probable. that since 1914 an entirely new bed of oysters has sprung up and-been in pearl bearing. The result of the Inspection will be, therefore, awaited with a good deal of interest,
