THE ESCAPE OF KOREAN

PRINCE.

W... bad a Shanghai telegram. about this Prince recently,

On November. 9.at 8pm. Prince Y? was found to be missing from his palace. The police were at once put on the trail and on November J1 at 11,30 p.m., he was discovered au the railway station at Antung,

in the power" of a leader of the Korean Independence movement. The Prince afterwards sald be was. a wiling traveller.

The embargo, that has hitherto teen imposed upon the news regard- ing the escape of Prince Yi, a son of the late Emperor, on the night of Nov. 9 from the house in Seoul where he is practically confined, and about: his subsequent capture; has now been formally itted. The Japanese papers have come out with detailed accounts of the incident though, they seem to be in the dark as to how and why the Prince made his unsuccessful attempt. The bare fact of the case- is that on the night of Nov. 9 the Prince left his house unobserved by anybody, at least by the Japanese on guard. As soon as the fact became know much alarm was naturally caused! - among the authorities of Prince Yi's Household, as well as those at the Government-General. A thorough and unremitting search was immediately instituted but no· clue as to his whereabouts was obtained for a few days. The Japanese authorities in Korea, and Japan proper issued orders to the Press against the publication of the news, and the search continued. On the night of the 11th he was finally discovered at:a "certain place." at

· New Wiju, and he was taken back to Seoul on the 13th under police escort.

It appears that whenever the Prince left his house at night he Was habitually shadowed by a. Japanese policeman, but on that particular night the policeman charged with. this special duty did not notice- the Prince leave. It is inferred in these circumstances that he scaled the wall to escape..

-As regards the daily life of the Prince, very little is said in the Japanese Press. Indeed, it seems that all officials who were asked to give some particulars in this connec- tion refused to enlighten the curious Interviewers on the point, though reference is made by more than one of the officials to the uncommon taste of the Prince for alcoholic drinks.

One report has it that, when he was caught the Prince-was on his way to Shanghal to lead the inde- pendence movement. He was dis covered in a third-class... railway · carriage, being attired in-a-jacket buttoned up in front and an over: ·

His only personal "property was a portmanteau, Containing toilet articles. He had in his possession-- about Y200 in cash.

coat.

The Mainichi's version of the case is that Prince Yi has always beeri desirous of making a tour abroad. His desires were further augmented by a description of things abroad given by his brother-it. law, who had once studied in America. Both were equally eager to go abroad, but neither had any chance of carry- ing out their intentions. About September last, a certain Korean, a

Provisional Government at Shanghai, managed to have an interview with the Prince's brother-in-law, Kim Shun-"- ki, already referred to in a house adjacent to the Prince's mansion. At this interview the secret emissary from the Shanghai Provisional Government narrated the state of affairs at Shanghai, and ex- pressed a desire that the Prince should consent to lead the move- ment for the recovery of Korean national right. This wish of the Shanghai Intriguers was subsequently conveyed by Kim to the Prince, who. expressed himself willing to make common cause with them provided sufficient funds were forthcoming. In the meantime, arrangements were made by the intriguers to raise the eum of Y30,000 în a certain quar. ter." The delivery of the money to the Prince, was fixed for the 9th instant, when the escape was made by the Prince from his residence. The name of the leader of this intrigue is given in the Japanese Press as Zen Kyo who was at one time the headman of a district.
