The importance of the subject was becoming very great in the closing period of the war and a special design was made at the Royal Aircraft establishment which could be rotated on the spinning tower at speeds up to nearly 1,200 £s. The results obtained were very striking, the simplest of observations sufficient to indicate a great departure from the type of flow on which normal air- screw design in based.. Standingʻin the rear of the airscrew, the usual strong breeze was felt at speeds below 900 f.s., but disappeared before | the top speed of 1,160 fs.was reached, leaving a region of comparative talm. The change was noticed more readily on shutting down to the suddenness with which the slipstream made its re-appearance. The phenomenon was more closely in- vestigated and it was found that the new type of flow was largely con trifugal, whereas the normal, fow resembles that in a jet of rather less diameter than the airscrew Thara 4482-rådnev tion of power with speed, but con. siderations of momentum” suggesti that almost the whole of the thrust had disappeared.
