Berlin messages to the New York American state that the Germans have destroyed 12 out of 18 airships which were to have been banded over to the Allies under the Peace Treaty. This repetition of the Scapa Flow treachery is stated to be the work of a young naval officer. The news is said to have caused consternation at the German Foreign Office, where it is vigorously denied that the Gov erament had any knowledge of the plan to destroy the airstipe. These alships were probably at Nordholz, Dear Hamburg, where there is ac- commodation for 18 Zeppelins. By Article 202 of the Peace Treaty the Hun airships were to be maintained inflated with hydrogen till they were Burrendered not later than three months after the treaty came into fordo..

CHINAMEN SELLING SHELL CASES AS SOUVENIRS.
Visitons to the battlefields of Flan ders may see daily examples of how public property is wasted. Among the "dearing up parties along the battle front are largo numbers of Chinese coolieser "Chinks," as Tommy Atkins' calls them.
Presumably these Chinks" do legitimate work sometimes, though the greater part of their day seems to be devoted to selling shell cases to souvenir-hunting visitors.. Pass- ing through such destilate spota as Houthoulst Forest one finds the road- side lined in places with Chinamen plying a brisk and profitable trade in brass shell cases upon which a crude design bas been scratched.
"Would you like some nice sou- veniry?' aplus the driver of the tour; ing car, turning to hie passengers, who oborus an enger "Yes" Mak- ing a signal with his arm, the driver pulls up. As soon on Chink "be sold one pair be produces another. The supply ap pears. Imitless, and nearly always. It ends in the souvenir-hunters getting is 'runy cases as they want at any price they like. Frequently a Chink will rush up at the last incment with an armful and hand the whole lot over to the first person who holds out two francs to him.
All these shell cases are of solid brams, and their scrup." value rust be many times the trifling sum for which the Chinanten dieptees of them. Even if it were not, the pub to funds do not get the proceeds of the eule. This land of trafficking how been going on every day for a long time. And as a hundredweight or more of badas often goes into one small car, the lot to the public purie must be considerablem
