A Bombay message of September 11 states that-a public meeting of women of Bombay was held at Vanita Vishram Hall to protest against the continuance of indentured labour in Fiji Lady Phero:eshaw Mehta was in the chair. Lady Mehta, in addressing the meeting. expressed their great satisfaction and gratefulness to the Government of India for having put a stop. to the practice of taking Indian labourers to Fiji and other colonies. under indenture and referred to the Viceroy's sympathetic reference to this question at a recent meeting of | the Imperial Council. Although Government were trying to get the existing indentures, of Fiji labourers cancelled the people of India were greatly disappointed at the Fiji Government's refusal to cancel the indentures of Indian labourers, there They respectfully urged once again 'the Government of India to continue |**
their efforts in this direction until they succeed. Mrs. J. E. Petit moved the resolution: "That the women of Bombay hereby express satisfaction over the statement of His Excellency the Vicercy that the Government of India are in correspondence with the Fiji Government and the India office with a view to securing the annul. ment of existing indentures in Fit before the end of the year and hope that in no case will the Govern- ment of India agree to the continua- tion of indentures under which the honour of woman is not safe and which in many other ways is a system fraught with hideous immorality." The resolution was supported by Lady Fazulbhoy Currimbhoy and others and unanimously passed. Another resolution was passed thanking Aus- tralian women for their sympathetic interest in the mitigation of the mis- eries of indentured Indian women in Fiji.
