CABLES ACROSS THE PACIFIC.
HONGKONG STOCK
SECOND LINE ASSURED.
In view of recent telegrams regard. ing the laying of a new cable across the Pacific, an announcement in the "San Francisco Chronicle" is of con- siderable interest Evidence was re- cently given before the L. S. Com- mittee on Commerce regarding the difficulties in the way of a new cable, these being largely due to the lack of gutta percha, and a witness who was called considered that the Commercial Pacific Cable Co., would probably be unable to secure the necessary supplies. The statement. in the San Francisco Chronicle," which is given below, seems to sug- gest that this difficulty has been
evercome.
"
London, September 5-George G. Ward, vice-president of the Commer cial Cable Co... who has been in London for the purpose of arranging for the manufacture and the lying of a second cable from San Francisco across the Pacific, informed the As- sociated Press to-day that negotia- tions had reached a point where a second cable was virtually assured direct from San Francisco to the mainland of Japan. Ward said:
"It is a matter of great importance to the American and Japanese Gov- "ernments, as well as to the business
interests of both countries, that Japan should co-operate by giving early consent to the landing and, operation of this cable, so that its manufacture may be commenced as soon as practicable.
The cable company does not intend to ask a guar tee or financial assistance from eith the American or Japanese governь eats; it merely asks landing rights suitable for working and maintaining a second ¦ cable with the utmost efficiency. Cable manufacturers state that gutta percha and other materials for the manufacture of submarine cables are limited in amount, and other cables. have been ordered in the past four years for various parts of the world. Herce, it is of the greatest import ance that Japan give immediate consent in order that the company may proceed."
(Note-Stil another cable line across the Pacific is being planced, as was shown in Toky advices of July 25, stating that prominent Japanese business men had decided to form a company capitalized at approximately $25,000.000 for the laying of a cable between the United States and Japan. It was expected, it was said that the enterprise also would be supported by business men of the United States.)
