OPENING OF ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL SEASON,
August 20.
Enormous crowds were present at all the football grounds for the open- ing of the Senior Football season. The shilling gate proved no deterrant, and the boycott protestors against the increase registered a complete defeat. Indeed, football promises to be more popular than ever before
the war.
The results were pretty much as anticipated, the only home team to lose two points being Airdrie, and at that Rangers came perilously near to leaving one point behind, as they did last season. Dundee and Raith Rovers were doubly handicap. ped in having to play reconstructed i teams onopponents grounds; and it was because Albion Rovers were in the same predicament that Aberdeen were the only member of

THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ELEVEN. The tour of the Scottish Public Schools XI. was a happy inspiration, and it is hoped that it will become an annual event. It was a good achievement to beat Drumpellier and Forfarshire, and no disgrace to lose to Perthshire and West of Scotland, by strong sides. In the five innings as both happened to be represented
of the tour, C.R.T. Moir had an average of 41 runs, J. C. Dykes, 31 runs; J. M. Garrett, 31 tuns; and B. W.. Berry, 26 runs. In bowling, H. J. Stevenson had 5 wickets for an average of 19 runs; B. W. Berry, 9 wickers for an average of 22 runs: an average of 29 runs. and B. W. Whitelaw 4 wickets for

The amateur tournament pro
by the Town Council of St. Andrews and held over the Eden course is a new item for the post-war calendar,
the newly admitted clubs to gain and judging from the success that Two points. As befitting their cham-attended it and the interest it
pionship position, Celtic led off with a decisive victory, but their tearn as a whole did not greatly impress. Defence again seems to be Third Lanark's trunip card, if one may judge from the stonewall resistance met by the Hibernian forwards. Morton and Thistle were more forcible than skilful, and they put up an exciting game. Queen's Park came well out of a hard game with Hearts.

CRICKET,
The Australians are in Scotland on holiday, and have been the guests of several Scottish'eportsmen.
The cricket season is drawing to a close, several clubs having already finished ther engagements. The best thing of the week was John Kerr's 122 against Ayr; he is unquestion ably our top batsman at the present time,

created it promises to take a pro- minent place among the tourna- ments which appeal to the younger golfers. Even as late as the semi- final there was a double chance of a local victory marking the inaugural meeting, but neither Mr. Denys Kyle, one of the most promising of our Scottish amateurs, nor Mr. Walter Blackwell survived the round. The final was contested by the young northern golfer, Mr. Ian Munro, and Mr. W. J. Guild, who is well known in Edinburgh. The close finish be. tween two steady players was in favour of Mr. Munro, who hits as straight if not very long ball off the tee, and putts rather better than the average.
A MEETING OF TENNIS CHAMPIONS.
Lately an interesting match was played in Edinburgh in which the opposing sides were L. Balfour Melville (Scottish Single Champion in 1879), partnered by A. M. MacKay 7), against two well-known Liberian (Scottish Singles Champion in 1905-6- players, W. G. Manson, and Robin' Welsh (ex-Eas of Scotland Champion).
Balfour Melville and A. M. Mac- Kay won by 2 sets to 1, a proof that the old hands have not lost their skill
