greater expenditure on military and naval matters, the, continuance of actual war expenditure, and large new blocks of expenditure that have been sanctioned by the House on pensions and higher pay for the navy and army. On the other side of the account there is a little item of 70 millions which cannot be expected to come in because the Government has decided that it is not safe to lax the food control, and consequently the realisation of the vast trading stocks of the Ministry of Food will not be carried out. All this was perhaps inevitable, but the curious thing about it is that" Mr. Chamberlain does not seem to regard it as a situation which required to be dealt with by any special measures. Hecalmly tells the House of Commons that his Budget estimates are going. to be out to an extent which will clearly amount to at least 100 millions, about half the total of the pre-war expenditure of the British Government, but he does not seem to think that anything particular has to
be done to meet the position "which has so arisen. In other words, he la (apparently going to do exactly what the people who refused to subscribe to the loan said would inevitably happen.
