It is now six years since we have thad a typhoon in Hongkong, and it may be of interest to overhaul the available information on the subject and to reckon up the chances of our further inmunity from a visit of one of these c'estructive storms,
The first difficulty is to settle on same standard by which we can say when we have had a typhoon and when we have escaped one. The distance from the centre is no guide, typhoons vary an greatly in size and intensity that we often get a heavier gale with the centre 100 miles away than when it is within 50 miles. The damage done must also be left out of count. Afloat it is largely remembered that returns such as
