TWO GREAT GOLFERS.
THE SPLENDIO RECORDS OF
HILTON AND BALL. ↑
One understood that John Ball had definitely retired from competitive golf, that wild horses would not drag him out on to the tee again in even a club event. One was therefore greatly surprised to read that he had played in a stroke competi- tion at the Lensowe Club, of which he is a member, and that, he had returned the best scratch score of 73.
But it is all a mistake. The great John Ball, of Hoylake fame, did not play at Leasowe. For all oc knows he may have been touring. the country on his motorcycle at

The mistake arose in this way. There is another John Ball, and to distinguish him from his more famous namesake he has always been known locally as "John Balk of Leasowe, er again as "John Ball 2". In this instance the winner was given as "John Ball (2)," but to those who did not know these curious facts It was very easy to fall into the mis take.
This Johr Ball, who, I believe, is; a distant relative of the Hoylake man, is also a fine golfer, and at one time held a handicap of plus TWO. Now, when over fifty years of age, he is rated at scratch, and it was. from this mark that he won the prize at Leasowe with a return of 73.
As for "the" John Ball, there is 'very little likelihood of his ever again attempting to add a ninth win to his record in the Amateur Championship. He was а little
weary of competitive play before the war, and though he played at Sand- wich in 1914 it was in a forlorn sort of way. He was fifty-five years of age at the beginning, of this year, and it is forty-one years since be first took part in the open champion- ship. That he should now count his honours sufficient is not surprising.
Now, when the two men are ärriving at an age when golf must present to them hitherto un- familiar difficulties, it is not Un- natural that the question as to whether John Eall or Harold H. Hil- ton has the better record should arise. It is impossible to hope for agreement on the point, and there are some who say that the late Freddie Tait, who was killed in the South African War, was a better player than either of them.
In comparing Ball and Hilton in the Amateur Championship. Ball has eight wins against four. But it is hardly fair to leave the matter there. The Open must be taken into ac count. In this Hilton has twice been successful against Ball's once, and in the case of the latter his success was achieved before the event was ex- tended from 32, to 72 holes and before the field became so large and was so very difficult to win.
Taking the records of the players) in the Open and Amateur comperi- tions together, it is very difficult to find any dividing line.
