(Continued from Fage 3) “THE PERLER BOYCOTT.””
A Sinn Fein meeting held near Thurless on February 25, 1919, was- addressed by Mr. A.Burke, a Sinn Fein MP., who used very violent language. The meeting was broken up by the police. who arrested Burke and found on him a manuscript draft of his spetch on the occasion, which was partly undelivered. The following are extracts from the speech -
Now the attitude of those mis- guided men who condemn such incidents as the heroic rescue of Knocklong is an example of the wrong attitude to assume from the Republican point of view. These men are still labouring under the delusion that they are a British possession Let them get it into their heads once and for all that they are living in an Irish Republic, declared by Patrick Fearse in 1916. and sanctioned by the lawful sanction
of a people's overwhelming choice in open voting at the last general: election. caught in the act. If any man shoots or otherwise destroys-one of them he may rest easy in his conscience, for he is only carrying out the sent ence already passed on him by the Republican Government."
ATTACKS ON DWELLINGS, As further evidence of the mea- sures taken by Sinn Feiners it may be mentioned that they have on frequent occasions attacked dwel lings for the purpose of raiding, for arms, have stolen arms, have mali- ciously damaged public property and the private property of individuals, have been the authors of incendiary fires, and have been guilty of gross intimidation.
In one case a lady who was alone in her house was assaulted whilst attempting to prevent masked Sinn Feiners from stealing her husband's gun.
In another case, a member of the County Council at Clonmel was held up by four armed Sinn Feiners-who presented revolvers at him.
In another case a man received a letter threatening him with death if he had anything to do with the police.
Owing to the increase and serious character of the crimes committed by Sion Felners since the Proclama. tion of July, 1918, in particular in the county of Tipperary, and to the fact that the measures already taken have not checked their criminal actie- vities, the Government have been compelled to suppress the organisa- tions in the county of Tipperary as- unlawful associations.
