harbour railway teminals over which from 1,000 to 1,300 cars are moved daily and the Commissioners perti nently ask at what other port in the world can so much high class accom- modation be shown created at so little cost. The channel of the river from Montreal towards the sea has been deepened and widened and. lighted, till in the season of 1918 there was never less than 30 feet of water available, and it is stated that masters of the noted Union-Castle. and Peninsular & Oriental liners who came here for the first time on war service, have given splendid certificate of the excellence of the alds to navigation and improvements which have resulted in such a splendid waterway."
Montreal has a grain handling and storage capacity that exceeds any other North American' Atlantic port and can receive, store, handle and ship grain with greater despatch and economy than any other port on this continent. Grain Elevator No. 1 is 530 feet long, 128 feet wide and 202 feet high, its storage capacity is 4,000,000 bushels and it is the largest seaport elevator in the world, Grain Elevator No. 2 is 457 feet long, 100 wide and 220 high; storage capacity 2,662,000 bushels. It is the first large terminal elevator building.con- structed entirely of reinforced con- crete. Elevator No. 2 is connected with No. 2 and can deliver grain over 10 miles of rubber belting to all of the 15 steamship bertha in the central harbour at the rate of 60,000 bushels per hour.
New York because of various well known causes is the great shipping part of the North Atlantic Coast of this continent. Montreal is next, and the following official figures show how its business for the year 1917 compared with those of the great North American ports:-

"The port of Montreal in 1918 reached a commanding position in connection with commerce between. North America and Europe,, owing to the safety of the ocean route and to the fact that Montreal Harbour was ready and adaptable for either war or peace commerce. Shipments through the port of Montreal were limited only by the extent of accom- modation in the harbour and by the volume of freights the railways centering at Montreal were able to handle."
The numbers and tonnage of vessels using the port of Montreal during season 1918 are given as follows

YOUR ARMY OF DEFENCE.
Its Arduens Wark.
Every one of: ús can trathfully say that we have a vast army always çu guard for us so that we may live in health and comfort.
