HUSBAND'S SEMARKÄBLY LETTER TO HIS WIFE.
An extraordinary letter from a husband to his wife was read' in the Divorce Court on June 20, when Mr. Justice Coleridge granted a decree of restitution of conjugal rights to Mrs. Isabel Eliza MacKenzie‘against her husband. Mr. V. St. Clair Mackenzie.
It was stated that the 'marriage. took place in London in 1901, and that trouble occurred last year owing to Mr. MacKenzie's acquaintance with a Miss Carr. He finally left his wife, who wrote asking him to return. In reply she received the following All Fools' Day, letter, dated 1919 ** ----
Dear Belle am glad to see your handwriting, and to be able to infer from it that you are in good enough health to write dictation. Unhappily, your letter is not original I see in it the same old weary common form" which apparently lies dogeared and desiccated, and sometimes though not often, tear stained, on the table of ev ry solicitor who accepts a fee to stage manage the worn-out farce which noning" men and women are compelled by law; to perform for the consolation of do- mestic cowards, and-for the edifica tion of those who believe marriage to be a partnership, in a caterer's business.
However, one prologue is as good as another in such a piece. Very well! up with the curtain! I do not blame you. I reproach you with nothing. I merely abominate a country which insists on making women hypocrites by Act of Parila- ment. You ask me to return to you. Where are you living? Where is your home, to which you have re moved all the furniture to-day? And why, oh, why did you degrade my sister, whom I love, by asking her to be a sheriff's officer?
Does it not all show that your appeal, or rather your solicitors' appeal, is a mockery? Well, you have to play the game, otherwise no such letter, worded by your solicitors and falsely signed by you. could have been sent. You are under influences which I hope may guide you with more success to happiness than ever mine did or could, though, God knows, 1 tried my best within the range of my poor endurance. You want to be free. You have the right to be. I shall not lift a finger to frustrate your desire. You shall have your own way in the end a woman's growning victory.
You say or your solicitors say that you could forgive. Have you ever in seventeen years forgotten anything that was unpleasant? You wrongly accused me of infidelity times out of number. Can you blame the poor devil who is always branded as a blackguard if in the end he is persuaded that he is, and then does his best to play the part?
Yet, lest you may think in the years to come that I have been wholly unjust, let me say now in these probably the last few words you shall ever receive from me that I shall do my best to outstrip you in forgetfulness of all but kindness. I am not now else I might go to a solicitor and obtain from him some such hideous invoice of bogus affections as that which you or they have sent to me.
