perils of a new war he in the Far East gives a fresh interest to the views of the Chinese plenipotentiaries. in Paris on this subject.

"

Mr. C. T. Wong, who, with his colleagues, represents the Chinese) Republic, with its four hundred mil lion people at the Peace Conference. said in conversation, with a special representative of the "Westminster Gazette," "I am strongly impressed with the high spiritual tone of this Commander-in-Chief of great armies. It is an impressive fact that he should direct our attention to the spiritua and moral forces that will control the future. When Sir Douglas Halg

spoke of the British Empire as being GREEN ISLAND CEMENT CO., LD.

based on idealism he expressed a truth with which I agree, that an empire will die if its idealism dies..

"These

expressions show the conception that Sir Douglas Haig had as, to the iraportance of spiritual right-living and right thinking as a basis of a strong. well-organised. government and country. In that view he is distinctly sound. His con- ception of levelling up the standard of life and of civilisation in the Far East is one with which I also agree heartily. The Kaiser's conception of policy in the Far East is entirely contrary. He expressed his view when he said to Prince Henry of Prussia just before he was leaving to arrange the lease of Kiau Chau in 1898 that he was, to be prepared to strike with his mailed fist. The Kaiser's view was that it was the duty of Europe to exploit the East for the advantage of the white periple.

The whole point is that, if the four hundred millions of Chinese people are to be forced to fight for their own existence and to get hold for themselves of the strong mailed fist, there a

ween the white peoples and the Chinese. But the Chinese do not believe in war: the Chinese believe in moral forces të buik up a civilisa- tion of a high order. We believe in what Sir Douglas Haig said—the levelling up of the whole social life..

The growth of China from a small State of three or four 'million people to the present stage of four hundred millions living on four million square miles of territory has been created through moral forces. It was a process of levelling up the surrounding tribes and people. Our literature, our philosophy and our idealism have gone with us and, as it were." converted the surrounding tribes.

Coming into contact, however, now with a Christian civilisation, we find a higher order still of idealism based on a conception of mutual service. If the Western peoples now will endeavour to help China in her transition from the old order into the new order, through the process of levelling up instead of levelling down, then the world will have an assurance of peace and the League of Nations will become a reality.

We younger men in China aré doing our best to convince Chiza to go against militarism and to develop on democratic lines. We are firmly convinced that our cherished idealism, our belief that war is a curse, is correct; that the nations can adjust their differences through a right conception of the relation between nation and nation, and though the supremacy of international law over violence and physical force.

In our effort to establish a true fri democracy in China we are convinced that an effective way of realising our objective is to bring Christianity to the Chinese people. We believe this because in Christianity we find the very basis of true democracy. Democracy is based upon mutual confidence, mutual service, and mutual love: and these are the very lessons that Christianity teaches.

"In that endeavour to bring Christ- lamity to our people we have been very successful, especially in the last decade. A large number of influen tial men of the educated classes have become Christians. I could give three instances of the different kinds of men. There is Mr. L. C. Nieh, (the son of a former Viceroy, and the grandson of Marquia Tseng-kuo-fan, the best-known statesman of the nineteenth century in China; Mr. Ching-pang-ping, for several years the Minister of Agriculture and Commerce for China; and Mr. Chang-po-ling. the Principal of Nan-kai School, the leading private school in North China to-day. After he became a Christian himself he has been instrumental during the last two years in leading over two hundred educated people into the Christian Church."

It is interesting to know that Mr. Fr C. T. Wong himself is a son of the Chinese manse (his father having g been a well-known Chinese pastor), and that he was educated at the Anglo-Chinese College of the London Missionary Society at Tientsin before entering on his brilliant and stainless jewe political career.-Weilminster Gazzité,
