shoot of rather generalised man: NEGRO REMOTE FROM THE APE.
In his scartiness of hair, in his pur ly or tufted hair, in his intensity of pigmentation and rounded forehead with absence of brow-ridges, the Negro is more remote from the ape than the European. This also applied to his length of head, though the narrow forehead is closer to the ape, as are also his greater proportion of fore farm to upper arm, his wide. nose with low root and some other characters of a minor kind In his prognathism the negro comes closer to the ape, but here again the capa- city to maintain good teeth some. what offsets this as primitive or back- ward in the scale of ascent. Mani- festly it would be better to suffer the purely aesthetic evil of prognathism than to wear a perpendicular face at the expense of sans teeth," and a mouth fit only for speaking and im- bibing. The ominous present dele. rioration of teeth is not confined to Europeans but is quite marked in" Japanese who often imbibe the soft rice with little or no mastication. The remedy for this would be to underboil the rice, which of course should be left partly unkulled on ac- count of the vitamines. The old Scottish "brose," which consisted simply of oatmeal with a pinch of salt stirred in boiling water, was an excellent article of diet, containing vitamines and lecithin. The import ance of diet in altering or maintain ing physical characters is beginning to be realised, but the physical effect of spiritual food, through education. and experience, is hardly yet dreamt of in our philosophy.
THE ELUSIVE MONGOLIAN RACE.
We hear much of a Mongolian Frace, but where is it? There is a Mongolian type or concept. This is obtained by classing together certain characters which often do occur in concentrated association (but as often not) in the regions where the Mon- golian. race is supposed to exist. These characters are brachycephaly for round-headedness, breadth and flatness of the nose, especially at the root, absence of browridges, wide) forehead, broad cheekbones, some (prog-nathism, shorter stature, sickle- shaped or epicanthic fold covering the inner angles of the eyes, scanty hair on face and body, hair which is apt to be round on section, hence often coarse. This concept, like that of other distinguishing concepts, is a question. of average, a question as to how many persons in a group or region embody an ensemble of char acters such as the foregoing. The lecturer made bold to say that our natural tendency to notice and ex- aggerate the unfamiliar is largely re- sponsible for the notion of a Mongo- lian race. As a matter of fact all of such characters are to be found in European and other stocks of mar kind, but distributed in different pro- portions, so that they attract less attention. The most pronounced falciform or sickle-shaped fold he had ever seen was a European child of eight years of age, while every one knows that the European infant nearly always carries that character. Round-headedness is very common in Europe. Se is what he might call a pernicious prognathism, caused by narrowing and consequent throwing. forward of the upper palate, often associated with the common trouble called adenoids. It could not be sald that broad and.round foreheads with scanty, hair were anything but far removed from the ape. It coulit hardly be questioned that most if not all the present stocka of mankind“ were equi-distant from our simlan ancestors, and that the observed differences resulted from the relation of life in varying surroundings and from miscegenation or interbreeding, which concentrated and again dis tributed the characters arising from, each mode of life.
