To strengthen the sailing ship portant branch of coastal shipping trade in the Lnited Kingdom, and further the development of this im- new association has just beer formed with headquarters in London, and branches are shortly to be opened in the main ports,
Early in 1919 sading ship owners Had a conference with the idea of forming a body to protect their interests. They came to the conclu sion that the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom might do this for them. But a year has shown that sailing ship interests are so extensive, and the Chamber of Shipping is too busy with steamships to have much time for sailers, and the owners of the latter have formed an independent association of their own.
The Coasting Sailing Ship Owners' Association, Ltd. has been formed far the protection of the interests of owners of sailing, fishing, motor and auxiliary vessels, with offices at 49, Leadenfall-street, London, EC.3, and Mr. Alfred Stocker, the general manager of the Sailing Ship Mutual Insurance Association, Ltd., is acting as pro tem. secretary.

This preliminary work will be com- pleted in about a fortnight, and the first general meeting will be then held in London.
About 75 per cent, of the sailing ships of the United Kingdom will be entered In the new organisation. There are already over one hundred members and new members are join- ing daily. The entrance fee is only £1 Is per annum
per member. irrespective of the number of vessels entered by such member, but should. the expenses of the Association exceed the sum derived from this source, then a call (which would not exceed 2d par ton) will be made to meet the deficit
The objects of the Association are purely to take auch steps as may be deemed necessary to obtain "better conditions for owners, especially in charter parties. To achieve this it is essential that unity among owners be obtained, and this can only be done by the majority of owners joining an association for that purpose.
The Association covers no risk undertaken by protection associations, and its objects are totally different.

It is intended to seek to obtain a uniform form of charter party-fair “. in its terms to both owners and charterers-and if merchants decline to enter into same, to request all chants on any other terms, and the owners not to carry for such mer.. Association has a means to enforce members to carry out their obliga-" tions to one another in this respect. If a dispute is purely local, and an owner has in consequence to keep his vessel idle, a scheme of com- pensation will be established.
