SERIOUS AFFRAY IN LONDON.

ARABS INJURED IN FIGHT OVER WEITE GIRLS.

As a result of a ght in Cable- street, East London, in May, four Atabs were detained at the London Hospital, four had their injuries dressed at Lemian-strect Police-station, and one Englishman was treated for a stiletto, wound. Two policemen were slightly injured.

There has been some friction between the Arabs and some young Englishmen who objected to English girls visiting an Arab eating-house- in Cable-street. On the night & number of ex-soldiers entered the eating-house and soon afterwards revolver shots were fired. A general fight followed, in which revolvers," knives, and bottles were used.

A large and hostile crowd gathered outside the restaurant, and were very menacing in their attitude towards the coloured men inside. A large num ber of policemen arrived, but were unable for some time to gain admis. sion. After the fight had been in progress for some time, however, they managed to get the wounded men and their prisoners away.

The eating house, which was badly damaged during the fighting, is said to be kept by an Arab, who caters for seafaring people of his own nationality..

A discharged soldier, who was stabbed during the disturbance, told a member of the Daily News staff that bottles and bricks were being thrown from the eating house by two- coloured men and an English girl

SHOULD A WIFE TELL?

Grace Mary Holdway, of Mosedale street, Camberwell, was summoned at Lambeth by Inspector Black for unlawfully concealing Sapper Hold- way when she knew him to be a absentee from his Majesty's Forces without leave.

Folice-constable Cosford, 956 P.. stated that on Feb, 5 he called upon -- the defendant and asked her if Sapper Holdway 'was at home. She replied that he was not, but com- menced to cry, and, not believing her statement, he asked her permission fo'search her house. She gave him permission, and he found Sapper Holdway. The man asked to be allowed to wash his hands and to change from civilian into "Army clothing. He gave him permision, and proceeded to speak to the de fendant. Afterwards he heard a noise, and saw the man disappear over the garden wall: The man gotr away..

Mr. Leycester: Her saying be was not in made no difference to your conduct? No. but it might have done if she had not cried.

Police-constable McKay spoke to arresting the man a month after his escape from the last witness.

Inspector Black stated that, in course of conversation with him the expect a wife to give her husband defendant exclaimed. "You can't away."

Mr. Leycester: What the defen- dant said had no effect. The police-- man did not believe her; it did no har. The man did not get away. in consequence of that. I rather agree with what the defendant gaid --you can't expect a woman to betray her husband. To defendant: I don't fell disposed to inflict any penalty upon you for this. Technically, you are guilty, but I shall dismiss the Offenders Act. summons under the Probation of

Christopher Edkins, a dustman in the employment of the Southwark Borough Council, who went to empty a bin on the premises of á trades- man, was bitten by a dog and at Lambeth County Court be recovered. £7 108. damages from the owner.

The dog was fastened by a chain, and for the defence it was said that there was sufficient space between- the bin and, the kennel for the dustman to pass

Judge Parry 1 think the dog decided that question.

Defendant said it was a nice, kind. dog, and played with the children, but it did not like strangers.*-

Judge Parry, in making the award,.. said that defendant must get a dog that would discriminate between people who came to steal and the milkman and dustmas, who...-were- honest people.
