Captain A. T. Dix has been ap pointed commodore commander of the Royal Mail Steam Pocket "Co.'s feet from Aprit 1. Appointed to .M.S. Moselle, under Captain J. Telling, commodore, in June, 1802, Captein Dix soled to the West Indies and joined the R.M.S. Eider, the last of the old paddle-wheelers that the company had. He stayed on the Indian strtion for two and a hal reare, and, after returning horne, went to Bmzil and the River Flute service in the Mondega, vader Cup- tain Green, who was let overboard just after leaving the Solent. Cap tajn Dix served in various ships as Ithird, second, and chief officer, fin-
ally getting ecomand of the R.M.S. # Aron in 1999. During the war the new commodore commanded the tsturica, one of the first ships to be commandeered by the Government for a hospital ship. Afterwards be had the Darro for two years, and the Amazon for one TeaT. The latter elin narrowly escaped being to pedoed 55 miles west of Vigo, a tor- "pedo passing about five yards astern of the ship. The cubmarine came to the surface, and, after three rounds from the shin's 8in. gum, she was strick amidships. heeled over, and sank. Captain Dix left the Amazon on leave, and joined the Duna, carry- ing troops from New York, and then switched off to the Brazil and River. Plate warte again.
