MAIMED GOLFERS."

ONE WITHOUT A THUMB, AND,” ANOTHER-MINUS A FOOT.

IT W

There were mary dramatic inct- Idents in the Services golf tourna ment at Sandy Lodge on April 9. The first was the narrow escape of Lord Charles Hope in his morning match with R. Thompson, who was a sapper in the Royal Engineers, and who lost the thumb of his right hand in the fighting on the Somme in 1917, Later in the day there was the defea of Lieut. Gordon-Lockhart by Capt.K. Lister Kaye at the 20th hole after having been dormy: two.

Though he was out in 39, Lord: Charles Hope was only one up at the turn against Thompson. He increas ed his advantage to two at the 12th, but at the 14th Thompson got down a three yards putt for a win, aud square at the 16th. where Lord Charles took three putts.

At the seventeenth, the testing. dog legged hole where one must place the second shot very accurately to have an easy approach, Lord Charles hooked his tee shot into the wood. According to the local rule; he was penalised a stroke, as well as dia- tance, and Thompson seemed certain to become dormy one. But the latter, in playing for safety, pushed an irom shot into a bunker, and after many adventures scrambled a half in 7. The home short hole was halved, and so the players went on to the nine- teenth where Thompson overran the green and took two to recover from the bunker.

"All" štekmers carry a duly qualified surgeon.

Thompson must surely be the most extraordinary golfer to "take all his shots be holds the club with the right hand below the left. Though he took a lot of pairs to show me". his novel grip, it is almost impossible to describe it, but the outstanding feature is that he inter-locks the little finger of the left hand with the first finger of the right. And the curious thing is that he had adopted this. strange and ungainly style before he lost his thumb in the war.

You see," he told me,"

"I am really a left-handed player. My left arm is stronger than the right, and I found that I could hit a much longer ball by placing it below the right and letting it do most of the work." Thompson is a Newcastle player, and has a handicap of plus one.

Lieutenant Gordon Lockhart, after having defeated Major Bernard Dar- win in the morning, had a great struggle with Lister Kaye. in fact he never got the lead until the 15th hale. But going to the 17th he was dormy two. From then, however, he was constantly in trouble, and lost on the 20th green.

Lister Kaye, who is in the Royal Air Force, is better known as a cricketer than a golfer. He is a member of the Wakefield Club, but has not played there for six years I've just had a round occasionally, wherever I have been stationed," he told me. He played well, but ought to have been beaten.

Another curious incident occurred at the 19th hole. Sergeant T. Reimer had a put to win the hole and match from Lieutenant A. V. McCar, and he got it down. Before doing so, however, he flattened out a depres sion in the turf, made by the ball, with his foot, and for this infringe- ment of rule he lost the hole and the match. Lieutenant McCan, who is an Irish barrister, lost his right foot in the war, and, considering that he has the handicap of arrartificial limb,... his golf was remarkable. ...

Captain C. K. Hutchison won the last two holes to finish all square with Major F. S. J. Morrison, and then was beaten at the 19th."Here his approach with a niblick stopped on the edge of the bunker, with his next he put the ball into the sand, and altogether, it took him six to reach the green. woeful finish,

It was truly a and, 29 Hutchison himself remarked, he Captain deserved to be beaten.-"Saracen" in the Daily Chronicle.

LORD BERESFORD AND THE NAVY.-

Lord Beresford has placed a notice on the papers of the House of Lords to call the attention of the Govern ment to the want of preparation of H.M. naval forces before the war as, evidenced by Admiral Lord Jellicoe's book, and to make certain charges: against Admiralty officials responsible for enormous loss of life, many thousands of tons of shipping, and the danger to our food supply where by our expistence was, perilled i and to move for a committee of inquiry into such charges as are made. No date has been named by Lord Bereaford.
