they did. Proceeding, he added that on Noveraber 23, 1917, the defend- ants gave the plaintiff one month's notice of dismissal. He refused to arre to the terms, and now claimed six months' salary. He did not obtain his new position until four months after his dismissal..
A TIN NEWSPAPER.
His lordship asked Mr. Matthews, what he had in a round tin box, containing a film, which he was examining.
Mr. Matthews: It is a tin news- paper in the form of a film, my lord using the plaintiff's own descrip- tion..
[+
His Lordship; I do not see why a newspaper should be in a tin. (Laughter.)
Plaintiff, giving evidence, said the gazette," was in the form of a film, up to 350 ft. long. and he claimed that it was a newspaper. He had to follow public events in the same way as the editor of an ordinary news- paper, and send out photographers of interesting to take pictures events.
He supplied the titles and explanatory notes to the picture. Two
gazette' hundred copies of the were printed, and they were exhibited at between 1,000 and 1,500, cinem theatres throughout the country. "Pictorial News," of which he was now editor, was a film-newspaper, like the "gazette." It was the pro perty of the Ministry of Information, and was used for propaganda "pur-i poses. He received £500 a year as editor.
Mr. Matthews, in reply to a ques- tion by his lordship, said the operator who worked the camera snapped distinguished persons, like judges, and the pictures were thrown on the screen with such titles as, for instance. "Mr. Justice Bailhache entering Westminster Abbey." Hum- ble persons like counsel were seldom filmed, but jockeys and actresses were most attractive subjects." (Laughter.) Counsel, in reply to further questions, referred to the higher salaries now being generally paid owing to the increased cost of living. Office boys were receiving salaries which would have made the mouths of their seniors water in pre-war days. His case was that it was all moonshine to suggest that the plaintiff's position was parallel to that of the editor of a newspaper. His view was that editors were given certain directions with regard to the general policy of a newspaper, and as long as they were carried out to the satisfaction of the proprietary they were left without interference,
His Lordship: I suppose if a pro-1 prietor insisted on the insertion of a particular paragraph his word would be law?
Mr: Matthews: An editor might consider it a great indignity and resign his position, M Runes (Continued on [Page 6.)
