sary machinery demanded an expendi- ture which was far in excess of the amount received from insurance.
During the year the company was engaged exclusively on work for the navy. At the beginning of the year some difficulty was experienced in procuring materials, but things improved in this respect when the authorities took the matter in hand. On the other band the position with regard to labour became worse and
worse.

ruined. The employment of war prisoners and women, who formed about 25 per cent. of our personnel, did not give very satisfactory results. as most of the prisoners worked unwillingly and the women did not prove to be suitable. In these circumstances it was possible to keep to contract time, and the cost of pro- duction was increased."
At the general meeting the share holders passed the report and ac, counts, and some inquiry was made as to the future of the company. In reply it was stated that large con- tracts had been cancelled by the naval authorities. In this connection negotiations with a view, to compen sation were in progress and it was confidently expected that they would terminate favourably for the com- pany. Various contracts that were nearly finished would in the mean. while be completed. It was neces sary, however, to take into account the demands for material that were made by the Entente. It was intend- ed to maintain the works to their full extent. The Howaldts Works was the only shipyard that had been in a position to change over to peace work, and this transformation had been effected to about 85 per cent., after the State had accorded certain facilities of a financial nature. So long as the situation did not grow any worse, it was hoped, even with an increased cost of production to be able to carry on the work and achieve favourable results.
