It may be observed that Mallorcan ignite is of very poor quality, and when used for bunkering purposes is invariably mixed with Austriancoal. The general verdict of its consumers appears, in fact, to be against its general use otherwise than as a sub- stitute, and there is, therefore, little doubt that when normal conditions are restored the volume for its de mand, at least for bunkering pur poses, will be almost negligible. The price of Mallorcan coal ranges from 30 to 100 ptas. per ton, and is cons sidered excessive as compared with pre-war prices for British coal.

There is no surprise in shipping circles at the reluctance of co-opera tors and trade unionists to accept the Government offer to take over the national shipyards. The finan cial basis of the offer has not trans ported (says a correspondent of the is well Morning Post), but it known that if the sums demanded for them bear any close relation to what the undertakings have cost the Government, the enterprises would be doomed to hopeless, over capi- talisation.
