Mr. Oken was born in the East End of Landon and was apprenticed to a basket- maker, when he was only. thirteen years of age, serving his apprentice. ship and for some years, after it was terminated obtaining his hving as a Journeyman basket-maker. His educa tion had been obtained in a National School, and after he was apprenticed he sought to extend his knowledge by attending night schools, going on to the Working Men's College, and the Birkbeck.
