THREE YEARS IN BED.
IDLEST WOMAN ON RECORD HAS TO RISE.
The notorious Mary Ann Toon is out of bed at last.
She is the wife of a Diton-on-the- Hall (Leicestershire), farm labouret, and for over three years she bas lain in bed, though there was nothing" the matter with her. Once the husband got her up for a brief inter val by throwing a bucket of water over her, and the magistrate advised i him.to try it again."
The house became in such a filthy. condition that the Sanitary Authority took action, and as a £6 fine was not paid nor the house cleansed, the magistrate issued a warrant for the woman's apprehension.
The police went in the early morn ing. Mrs. Toon-was got out of bed... and she was removed in a motor car to Birmingham prison for one month
AUSTRALIA'S "BEST"
NEWS."
The Melbourne correspondent of the N-C. Daily News, writing on. February 20, says that "any Austra lian will know what that caption means, namely, that general rains have fallen throughout this country." About every ten years Australia experience a drought of greater or less severity, and the whole continent has been having a very bad time for some months past. Even along the eastern coast of Queensland the monsoonal rains, which commence- late in December Ox early in January, had not fallen, while in Victoria severe bush fires in the: south and west had destroyed farms,. killed stock, and wiped out several small communities. Some human lives had even been lost, and public help was "being called for by the homeless and ruined settlers. "While these losses, of course, cannot be made good," continues the correspon- dent, "the position of the people is greatly improved by the general heavy rains. If these have not restored buildings stock and lives they have at least. restored credit, and the farmer with his land and credit and a good seasonable outlook can face the future with confidence. The great pastoral districts have also been' blessed, and reports show that even in the interior, where the annual rainfall is seldom more than six and often down to two inches, sufficient rain has fallen to last for many months, while there are indications. "of more."
MILLIONS AT STAKE.
Another step has been taken in the proceedings in connection with Lord' Michelham's will Some time ago a caveat against the proving of the will was lodged at Somerset House on behalf of "parties interested "shortly after the death of Lord Michelham. The effect of this was to prevent the estate, estimated at from £10,000,000 to £15,000,000, from being dealt with without notice to the person entering the caveat. In due course the trustees gave formal warning of their inten- tion to take steps to secure the grant- ing of probate. Captain Jefferson Cohn-who has been living in Paris for some time and was a business friend of Lord Michelham-lodged the caveat, and has now entered at appearance, which is an indication of b determination to contest the will. The next step is for him to file parti culars of his case, and then either toy take the matter to the court or abandon his objection. It is stated. that he claims to be acting in the interests of a party who benefits less under the latest will than under one which exists in Paris. Lord Michel- bam made a fresh will last autina. after his return to England from. France, where he had a seizure.. Except for legacies to servants, he left his fortune to his wife and two sons, but it is understood, that under the old will Lady Michelham benefited less, and his elder son the new Lord Michelham, more, than under the new l
