only survivors - of the crew? ¿cf... · twelve hands of the steamer Nimrad of Sir Ecnest Shackleton's Antarctic- Expedition. The Nimrod left Blythy on Tuesday for Calais, with coal, and should have passed" Yarmouth on: Wednesday at midnight, but she struck on the Barber Sands shortly)". before, filled with water, and began breaking up. One boat was carried, away empty, and after the engine roam filled the chief engineer could not be found. It is thought that be was washed overboard. The remain ing elever hands found the only shelter under part of the bridge. When it became evident that the Nimrod, which was fifty-four years

longer they got into the port lifeboat on the bridge deck, and waited for a wave to float it off, as the Nimrod that it was impossible to launch the was heeling over at such an angle boat. A big sea, however, capsized the small craft and left it foul of the wreck, all hands being thrown into the sea. Three managed to cling to the keel of the upturned boat, and held on for some time until she broke clear of the wreck. The cook (Charles Watson), after half an hourt relinquished his hold, and only James Truelson (mate) and Russell Gregory (boatswain) were able to hang on five hours until the boat, when the tide changed, was blown ashore near Yarmouth. Both men are suffering. from their experiences. No dews of the missing men has transpired, and the coast is being patrolled for bodies. Among the musing is Captain Dorann whose boate was at Brighton. The other men lived at Hull and Grimsby.

CUNARD CAPTAIN'S IN-

DOMITABLE PLUCK..

Since the stringent censorship on all matters dealing with the Mercan- tile Marine has been withdrawn quite. a nuirber of interesting stories of the heroism displayed by captains" and crews of the British Merchant Service Eave been..published but the story of how Captain S. Gronow of the Cunard Line,, endeavoured to save. This ship, the s.s. Vinovia, will rank among the foremost of the many incidents which will add to the it teresting history of the part played by the British Mercantile Marine iz the great war. .

The Vinovia was homeward bound from New York for London with a yaluable cargo of 9,000 tons. On the afternoon of December 19th 1917, when south-east of Wolf; Rock, she was struck by a torpedo. The attack was made...without the slightest. warning, and although the keenest lookout had been kept, the lurking Hun was not seen. As the torpedo had struck the ship in her vital part it did not take the ship very long to settle down. Fortunately a number of patrol ships were on the scene,

buoyancy, and Captain Gronow took every advantage of this, as his only thought was to save his ship. He put her engines at full speed and headed her towards the, beach. The torpedo, however, bad effected the engine-room, and the engines were consequently damaged, thus prevent- ing much progress, being made in getting towards the shore. In spite of the assistance of a small tug the Vinovia continued to sink, and all hands left but Captain Gronow, who remained on board. By this.. time it was pitch dark, but Captain Gronow with indemitable pluck. continued steering, taking soundings, and handling towing ropes, in addition to giving orders to the towing vessel. His hopes, how- ever, were doomed to disappointment and the vessel ultimately sank. The captain went down with the ship, but he was fortunately picked up by one- of the drifters which were in attend-: ance, he being somewhat, severely knocked about by the wreckage

For his heroic efforts to save his ship Captalu Gronow received the thanks of the Admiralty and a special - recognition from the Cunard Com*- pany.
