"NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA,

The report of the Nippon Yuseu Kaisin for the half-year ended Sept. 30 last shows some remarkable figures.

"

Twelve months ago the net profit of the Nippon Fusen Kaisha, then announced for the half-yearly period, was rightly described as remarkable. Indeed it was, for the profit showed

progressive rise from. £-480,000 for the six months ended Sept. 30, 1014, to £3147,000 in the corresponding period of 1017. The profit now dis closed for the six months ended Sept. 30 last has leaped up by 12,222,000 to £3,860,146. Is is a magnificent result' for the starchoklets, who re ceive a dividend of 60 per cent. as compared with 50 per cent. n year o ago. The Nippon Yusen Kuisha.divi dend has been raised in spite of au increase of the capital by £5,600,000 from £1,400,000 to £15,000,000 ou very favourable terme to the bare.. Phaklem. The amount required for the payment of the dividend now announced is just £1,580,000; as compared with 1040,000 distributed six months ago.

“82 INJURY TO THE KNIVES LGA JOHN OAKEY & SONS LIMITED BLACK LEAD MILLS, LONDON

JOHN BAKEY & SONS, LIMITED, "WELLINGTON MILLS, LONDON,

nese, crew, told me that his ship had not been in such good shape for a

year, and that not one time had the

steane been down, whereas in former days it was a continual quarrel with the remen to keep up sufficient pressure. On the voyage ncross the Chinese had chipped decks, painted. the houses and gear, and had kept the ship washed down, all of which tends to lengthen the life of a ship.

On an American ship which I handled recently, the crew FOS grumbling fighting lot of "sea low- yers. The muster told me they had continually preached the seamen's laws to him, telling him what he could do and what he could not do. During the whole time they were in port I did not see one sailor turn his hand to work-and still the ship was paying them 75.00 dols. gold per month, besides the overtine. Tuc master informed me that they were wise enough not to refuse duty and thus mutiny, but that au order given to them was not executed until they got good and ready to do it.

In comparison with the wages of 70.00 dols. gold per month, plus overtime, which the American sailors get, the Chinese suilons got from 16.00 dols, to 80.00 dols. (silver) per month

SHIP BUILDING.

-

According to Lloyd's Regialer. there were 424 merchant vessels, of 1,979,952 tons gross, under construc: tion in the United Kingdom at the close of the quarter ended Dec. 81. last. This is about 238.000 tons more than that, which was in hand at the end of September, and about 113,000 tons more than a year ago. Four vessels are between 20,000 and 20,000 tons. Other countries are building 1,760 ships, of a gross tón- nage of 4,012,037, bringing the meri chant ships under constriction in the world up to 2,180, of u tonnage of 6,021,960.

"A writer in The Times Annual Financial and Commercial Review points out the likelihood that Japan, with its cheap labour, will be able. with the help of American materials, to produce tonnage at costs as low as those of Great Britain, the pro- viding a market for American steel and at the same time establishing her own shipbuilding on a sound inter- national basis. The production of the largo Japanese shipyarde in 1918- amounted to about 700,000 tons gross, an enormously greater total than in any previous year. Even this is not their maximum; and if. as seems probable, the Japanese Government obtain, as a result of the Peace settlerent, concessiotis on the Asiatic mainland in addition to those which they already have, in- dustrial developments on the Chiness and Korean shores are inevitable- all with cheap labour and consequent low coste, and mainly with American atcel. So far as present appearances go, shipbuilding competition of a keen undercutting character may come from the Far East quite as soon as from any other part of the world.

The Antenor. 5,310 tons gross and 3,802 net, built at Belfast in, 1806, Fand owned by Ocean Steamship Co.,

has been sold to a Dutch finn.
