CRICKET "TALENT MONEY."

This season will see the game of cricket recommenced after four years' enforced ipactivity. Many county cricket chubs have suffered- some more than others;, but the fact remains that we have all got to put our shoulders to the wheel to make'. the best of what appears to be a baðkid Icok-out.

Among other alterations which will be made before the season closes, the question of "talent money' requires some little attention from all cricket committees. We have heard talk of abolishing all talent money for professionals; but surely this is a very bad line to take if you, meen to encourage the game among the younger generation?

Talent mouey is given to each player at the end of a season for Individual prowess with either bat or ball, and also for fielding. The following in an excellent scheme for all counties to take up scheme which has worked admirably with the counties that have tried for many, years.

At the end of a season a certain sum is put on one side for talent money the amount varying, in ac- cordinance, with the position in the chäpionship table of the club con- cerned. If the county finish at the top, then the amount. is its highest point: if "they finish second, the amount is lowered accordingly; if they finish third, the amount is lowered still more.

but this is the real point. How is the talent money given? In this way. It is given by marks for individual still in each match.

The Captain carries with him a little book which he uses at every possible opportunity-that is, at the close, of an innings or at the end of a day's fielding.

For every match he allows 5 marks as a maximum. A player who goes in to bat at a critical vime and makes just a few runs when badly wanted. or a bowler who gces on to bowl at another critical period and gets a man out, or "a fielder who' brings off a wonderful catch and saves runs consistently throughout the innings these men receive as many marks as a man who' bats all day on a good wicket for 100 runs, or a man who bowls most of the day for three or four wickets,

It is not a question of average if the talent money is given in this way it is more a vuestion of indivi dual skill, and it gives everyone a chance to bave a hand in the amount allotted.

We must ret dream of abolishing the idea of talent money. We must do all in our power to improve the benefits and to increase the amount by playing brighter cricket."-F.
