CRICKET IN 1919.

The Daily Telegraph of Jan. 1 -had this: At the meeting of the M.C.C. committee to-morrow afternoon the resolution passed by the Advisory Committee of the counties three weeks ago restricting all county matches next season to two days will come up for confirmation. In the ordinary course of events the con firmation would be merely a matter of form, the M.C.C. as a rule letting the counties mariage their own affairs course may, for all one knows to the without interference. The usual contrary, be followed to-morrow, but the abolition of the three day'a county match means such a departure from the custom of generations that the M.C.C. committee, it disposed to take action, will be fully justified in pointing out to the counties the disadvantages involved in the new scheme..

If the counties had been unanimous in wishing for two-day, matches there would, of course, be nothing. more to say. Such, however, was far from being the case. A majority was secured but only in "face of powerful opposition. Lord Hawke president of the M.CC. all through SHIRE » LINE OF STEAMERS, LTD, the war spoke strongly in favour of retaining three-day matches, and, though not a county representative at the meeting, he, of course, ex- pressed the view held by Yorkshire. Surrey are at one with Yorkshire on the point, and Kent had no desire for the change determined on. The wishes of the such counties would alone justify the question being re opened. Surrey's reluctance to break away! from a tradition that has prevailed for over seventy years. The Oval is much more than the headquarters of the Surrey Club. It is a cricket institution only second to Lord's. This being the case, its interests should not be lightly disregarded. The championship need not be taken too seriously. In a more or less experimental season it will be a simple matter, without going into decimal fractions, to decide which is the best county team.

AN IRISH PETITION.

During, President Wilson's visit to Manchester the following petition was presented to him through"the" American Ambassador:

Petition to President Wilson. From the Irish clergy and laity resid ent in Great Britain:

"We, the Irish clergy numbering 2,000, and the Irish laity to the number of 2,000,000, resident in Great Britain, respectfully appeal to you who are the acknowledged arbiter of the world's freedom to-day, and in whose hands, under God, we feel the future happiness of our country lies, to secure that Ireland, which rightly regarda herself and has ever regarded herself as a nation, should be specially represented at the Peace Conference by delegates from her own people, in the hope that the sense of justice of all the Allies might thus be brought to bear on her centuries old problems, and bring about their only satisfac tory solution. We further appeal to you so to use your unique influence that your own righteous principle of self-determination may be applied to Ireland, and thus effect not only her: peace, but the peace of England as well." He didn't do it.
