LEAD RISES £11 PER TON.
"Astonishment was expressed in Melbourne Stock Exchange circles at the end of November when it was reported by the Australian Metal Exchange that, the London quotation for spei" lead had risen no less than £ll per ton, to £40 10 per ton, while the "forward" rate had ad- vanced £11, to £39 1 per ton. Official' inquiries confirmed the ac- curacy of the quotations. Operators immediately "marked up" prices for Barrier stock.
No definite information had been received in Melbourne on November 26 to account for this sensational movement, Various theories were advanced, "one of the assumptions being that with the cessation of hostilities lead is no longer required in large quantities for munition par- poses, and restrictions upon trading in the metal had bean removed in London-the net result being that speculative factors had come into play once more. The rates for lead have been practically unaltered at £29 10/- for "spot" and £28 10 per mictal since ten, net, for "forward September, 1916. Prior to the de

FORD COMPANY'S 40-HOUR WEEK
Acknowledging the presentation of an address congratulating him upon. bis, knighthood, Sir Percival Perry announced that the hours of work of the employees of the Ford Motor Company (England) (T' in used), hither- 10.48 per week, would be reduced to 40, and the minin um rate of pay. altered accordingly, ensuring not only no loss to the workpeople, but in effect raising-wages as from Janu- ary 1, 1919. The minimum, or £3 per week, with an addition for profit. shaters of 38. per hour (12%), 'a weekly, total of £3 12s. The rew scale for 40 hours would be a mini- inum of 15. 10d. per hour, or £3-13s. Ad. per week, with an addition of 3d. per hour for profit sharers (10a), www.weekly total of £4 33. 4d. This "was the minimum rate for men. Meritorious work would be remuner- ated at higher rates up to a maximum of 2s. 8d. per hour, with Sd. added for profit-shares.".
The wage rates for women were not quite so high, but in future women might qualify as profit-sharers on the same basis as men. The minimum rate would be 1s. per hour, rising to-29. per hour, with 3d, added for those who qualify for the profit sharing rate. Thus, women over 18 years of age would get a mihimum of 40s. per week, with an addition of 10s. (30, per hour). share of profits, if they qualify for profitsharing, a total of 508. per week as a minimum. Meritorious work would entitle them to higher rates. up to 2a per hour, with 3d. per hour added as share of profits.
The qualifications for profit-sharing remained unaltered, with one excep tion. Hitherto the qualifying age had been' 21; this was was DOW reduced to 18. In exceptional cases young persons under 18 might participate. Such exceptional cases would only warrant profits being granted in special circumstances, such as when they were the sole sup port of home and dependents.
