Mr. K. Matsukata, the President ̈ of the Kawasaki, Shipbuilding Com pany, has a gigantic new, scheme for a Steamship Company. He an nounces that 33 ships of 9,000 tons each will be built this year, and thirty-four during next year, besides a few 15.000-ton pässenger boats, These with a speed of 18 knots. will have an aggregate tonnage of about 730,000 tons.

The concern will be known as the the Fukuyo S.S. Co. It will open a line to Bombay in March next, and subsequently on the Atlantic. It is claimed that the fleet will eventually exceed in tonnage nit only the NYK., but that of the, P. & O. SINI.

THE EXPANSION OF NAGAS KI.

The Nagasaki Press reports the formation of an association having for its principal aim the commercial development of the port of Nagasaki. The programme of the association has for its main object. Increased shipping facilities in the harbour and A embodies the following plans: stationary wooden wharf, 250 ken in length, is to be constructed on the foreshore at: Deshima, now occupied by the Customs Free Depot. The latter will, necessarily, be removed elsewhere. The sea in the neigh- bourhood of the "new wharf is to be. dredged to a depth of 30 shaku, at ebb-tide and to an extent of 120,000 tsubo in area. Nine more mooring buoys are to be laid in the harbour, in addition to the eleven now exist- ing, but two of the latter will be- Temoved when the wharf has been completed and vessels enabled to moor alongside.

BIBBY LINE CAPTAIN DEAD,

The Ceylon Times announces the death of Captain W. J. Sturgess, of the Bibby line. Captain Strugess wast in command of the Warwickshire when she left Ceylon in March of the present year and was torpedoed off Bizerta. He decided to run the ship- in to Bizerta harbour, and beach her there, which hazardous feat be ac complished successfully, displaying that courage and fine seamanship which he was well known to possess It is believed that on that occastor

probably during the torpedoing:of Captain Sturgess suffered. injury the ship, and he had been in hospitalTM under treatment ever since..

Captain Sturgess was a man close upon 50 years of age and the whole of his life had been spent, in the mercantile marine. He was a Chief Officer in the Company's service more than 20 years ago. In 1904, when Captain Burnett retired Captair Sturgess was given the command of the Warwickshire and to his first love he remained true to the end? Captain Sturgess during the wird made numerous jouneys, though, the Warwickshire on several occasion was seriously menaced by submarines" and other craft he succeeded in escap ing damage, until the unfortunate torpedoing off Bizerta.

KAWASAKI. KISEN KAISHA.

As already mentioned, the Kaw- asaki Dockyard, of Kobe, has been. making arrangements for the estab lishment of a steamship company with a capital of Y20,000,000. At first it was reported that it will be called the Taifuku (great lucky Kisen Kaisha, but it is now stated that the name of the Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha has been chosen. It ill be under the same management with the Kawasaki Dockyard

The offices of the new steamship company will be established at No. 18 on the Kobe Bund, by the end of March, and it will begin operations with ten cargo boats of 9.000 tons each. It is said that the company will acquire about 160,000 tons of new steamers during the next two years. These vessels, will be divided into four classes of 12,000 tans, 9,000 tons, 6,500 tons, and 2,700 tons. To start with, the Kaisha will Kawasaki Kisen) inaugurate services to Bombay and to North America. With regard to the former service the company, will shortly make a formal application to the Nippon Yusen Kaisha and the Osaka Shosen Kaisha for permissidi to join their freight convention. The new company also intends to ruh. passenger services, and it is reported that the Kawasald Dockyard is already arranging for the construc tion of a passenger boat of 18,000 tons, with a speed of 20 knots, a
