UNIVERSITY-TAUGHT JOURNALISM.
A cenference of British and American Journalists was held on. Dec. 16 at the Institute of Journa fists, Teder-street, E.C., and formed a committee to consider the best means of adapting the university Geuriculum to the needs of prospecs getive journalists. Mr. W... Courtney
presided. The visitors from America were Dr. Cunliffe (Director of the School of Journalism, Columbia University, New York), Dr. G. E. BicLean (secretary of the London branch of the American University Urion in Europe); and Dt. Fish (Professor of "History in Wisconsin University). Letters in support of the scheme were received from Lord Bryce, Sir W. Robertson-Nicol, De: Murray Smith and many others.

Sir Arthur Qui cr-Couch wrote:- "If I can be of use to your committee you may certainly command me. The bad writing perpetrated by under graduates and by the students of the women's colleges, who are worse, is enough to treat the heart. We are just acquiring a Chair of French, and we ought to push for Chairy of Education and of Writing, with train ing in journalism. But the public' schools are at the bottom of the evil. Taiversities should insist that our bys should be as carefully trained as are French boys in writing them meder tongue."
Lord Burnham wrote expressing his sympathy with the object of the conference.
Dr. Cunliffe said that in Colombia they had courses in reporting, "copy- reading, the history journalism, and law, especially the law of libel. There were also courses in interna tional relations, and there was a choice of other courses in editorial writing, short stories, and political writing. Replying to questions, he said that shorthand cccupied but a small place in American journalism, the work being mostly descriptive. Public speakers, who did not wish to be at the mercy of inexperienced shorthand writers, who frequently indulged in fancies of their own, took their own type- written speeches with them, but the American Press felt it ought to rise to the accuracy of the English Press.
Dr. McLean said he believed that,

WALKING FOR HEALTH OF PRICELESS VALUE.
There was never a time when the winter walk was of such priceless value as now. As a means of keep-1 ing in health and warding of the "flu" it is more precious than rubies.
The townsman is not fond of walk. ing. Rallway trains and tramway- cars have killed the habit. Most folk take their walks abroad in summer. Such people have no conception of the country in winter, They crouch before the fire and conjure up a picture of the wind-swept road, the stinging blast, the frosty air. As a matter of fact, the real lover of the country woos it most in winter. Take tram way-car or train to a suburban station, grap your stick, open your shoulders, and lift up your head--and walk on till your lungs are bursting with the keen sharp medicine of the countryside.
What is there to beat the joy of the open road? However dull the day, there is always, as George Bor. row said, the wind on the heath. The road, iron-bourd, with frost, is hard and firm to the tread. The hedges sparkle with rime. The trees, bare though they be, do not cower and shiver in the wind, but lift their arms to heaven and embrace the gift of the gods.
The hills are black when the cloud rests upon them, but the sun bursts through and the tints of winter glow in its golden radíance. The stream- runs quick and Leary, but as you near it you see a shaft of" sunlight, striking through and making every stone shize like a pebble of gold on its gravelly bed. Your spirits rise, your body glows, you are ready to sing with the sheer love of life, and J as you make your way through, the gathering dusk to where the lights of the village twinkle through the gloom, you are bathed in a radiance which makes even your finger-tips tingle.
But take this warning to heart. Do not hang about on a draughty platform at the end of your winter walk. That way lies disaster. Find the shelter of the waiting-room. Or, better still, ret to the village hostel and eat and drink to repair the energy you have used...
He that takeih his walks abroad in winter is a wise man, for he shall find it to the joy of his soul and the comfort of his body.
