GERMAN SHIPPING.

All German shipping having pass fed under the control of the Allies in conformity with a decision of the Supreme Wor Council arrived at In week, it will drahtlelis be of interest to summarise from numerous arti cles on the subject which have ap poured in walkinformed British jour

le during the war, facts and figures bearing on the subject.

A companaively recent semi-o cial German estimate of the tonnager of the German Mercantile Marine.. which, prior to the war, amounted to 3,450,000 tons indicated that it had been reduced to about 2,550,000 tons through losses of various kinds.

To this total of 2,550,000 the cont piler of the estimate added 674,833 tors for vessels interned in nepal parte. It is piobable that this lattéc figure should be considerably 19 dused, for it in, seemingly, the total tonnage known to be in neutral ports at the time of the commencement of hostilities, and its a well estab- ished Set that some of the vessels were surreptitiously fitted out as uiders, coning, in the course of their nefarious careers before long to atter grief through their inability to escupe the vigilance of British and other warships and armed cruisers.

According to some authorities- there were 1,550,200 tons of German shipping in German ports at the close of host ties, and at that time there was add to the total 950,000 tors for new revels, which included" two -new Humburg America Co. Eners of 56,000 tons and. 82,000 toos,

curgo. respectively shree steuners of 22,000 tons-each, as well as four vessels built to the order of the Norddeutscher Lloyd, ie., two mail and passenger steamers of 85,000 tons each and two freighters of 16,000 tons each.

It seems, therefore, that if the total tonnage of the Geimaa Mer cantile Marine is stated to be not- more than 2,500,000 it will be fount that we have not given the Hec credit for much more than they possessed when hostilities ended in November with signing of the terms- of the ammistice imposed upon them, not terms, be it noted, which we either propoved or were ready to dis- enss with the vanquished foe.

Germany's 2,500,000 tons of ship- ping represents only a very small portion of the losses, she inflicted with her submarines upon the ship- ping of Great Britain, her Allies, and Belitrals, and it stands to reason, therefore, that if as an act of ordi mary justice, she is compelled by the terms of the peace settlement to make good ton-for-ton not only will the shipping she has now to surren- der to our control pass out of: Ger--- man possession in the near future. but several years will elapse before she has been compelled to atone to a moderate extent for her foul deeds on the high seas, for a great many vessels will have to be built in Ger- man yards by German workmen at.. Gennany's expense in order that her obligations be duly-discharged.

If we mistake not sevenl German steamers left here hurriedly for Dutch Indies ports on news of Great Britain's declaration of war againsă Germany reaching these shores in August, 1014. They are probably there at the present time. Some of the vessels, that rushed away at top- speed were if we remember aright,. engaged in the Singapore-Bangkok trade, while others were trading re gularly between this Colony and Borneo. Others, too, were approach ing Singapore from Australis and Europe and had reached Sabang o its vicinity when they got news witch led their, corianders to seek
