TRACING THE BRITISH LINE

As a matter of record it is as well to give as clearly as possible: the fina reached by the British Army when the armiation went into effect, de vcar as can be ascertained, the positions roached. by the various Armies were as follows: Beginning with General Plumar's Second Army on the north, our poal tians tan from some point just east of Nedarbrakel, on the Niuoye road, south eastwards to Gramont, on tha River. Dendre, and thence followed a lina to Lassines and a point east of Hourain, where we had crossed, the river. Below here, the Fifth Army of Geners Birdwood carried, on lins running cast of south through Onlignin and Ghislenghien, and Gages. Thence, direction, our front passed cast of continuing in the same south-easterly

Leps by Mons The troops of General Horne's First Arty wera acist of Jirbise, and the line bere turned eastward to par on the farther side of Casteau, and through the custorly edge of the Bots des Hants, Aulacie, and southerly with a slight eastward trend, by St. Denis and Villers-St-Ghislain to a point of the Bayar Binche road, north-west of Haulchin. On the farther side of that road the line of the Third Army of General Byng ran by Villers-aire-Nicole, east of Barillien Flesten, Arierent, Gerfontaines, Farrier-al-Petite, and Obrechies to the junction with General Rawlinson's Fourth Army, the left-hand troops of which had thrust on to a point" nearly due south to Cousorie, whence the line ran southwards by Grandrieu and Frasies, then turning to the farthest easterly point reached on the whole front, in the middle of the Bois de Martinsart, and at Vieux Sart below. From here we follow the Framant River down to the junction with Belpe Majenre, and so on along the latter stream by Moustier to the junétion with the French. This was as near as pos sible our infantry line at the suspension of hostilities, though at various places. cavalry patrola were materially farther'
