CLOSING OF A KOBE SHIPYARD.

The termination of bestillties her led to the closing of a shipyard in Hyogo. In July, 1016, Mr. Hashimoto Kizo, B member of the House of Representatives, established the Hashimoto Shipyard, or Karumo Isles, Hyogo, which has since built only two vessels of medium size, with 300 workers in regular employment and 250 in coatal employment. The manager of the shipyard was suddenly informed by the proprieter that owing to the slump due to the armistice it had Been decided to close the yard for the time being, and was also told, to dismiss all the workers. When this decision of the proprieter was communicated to the men, they were greatly started, because it would be very difficult for them to abtain work elsewhere. Through the manager the workers asked, the proprietor to give extra allowances ranging from 30 60 days wages. This request was rejected by Mr. Hashimoto, who proposat o give from two-to sovom, daya” extra wages the regular workers, though no -special-allowance were the given to the casual workers. The men got angry ab this proposal, but they were placated by the police. For a time, however, it is said thero were disquieting symptome among the men.

HAQASAKI.

The.Nagasaki Frase reports that the Shinno-mary, 2,190 tons gross, which has been aground on Yakushima, on island off the south of Kagoshima Ken, since September last, has been sUCCESK→ fully refloated by the Toyko Salvage Com pany and has arrived in Nagasaki in tes of two of, the salvage company's bosta for repairs.

Tas Shiano mark left Saigon on August 25th, bound for Kobe, via Ken lang, with a cargo (27 248 bags) of rice consigned to Suzuki Shotru. Owing to stress, of weather on approaching the Japanese coast the vessel ran into Yaku- shima for shelter on September 11th The storm, instead of absting grew- worse and three days later the brow of the Shinpojmans" abandoned their

ship in a sinking condition.

The salvage operations are considered to have been more than ordinarily c ocssful and the vessel has been brought ints Negsealt without further mishap though all pimpe we kept at work during the course of the voyage,

To le reported that the cargo of toe is entirely worthless, owing to a glity submersion in sea water, and will be z total loss.
