The many friends of Mr. Carleton wo Greenly left this Colony after being for „Severai jenis a member of the American Consulate General here, will read with pinterest the following article which he Diss contributed to the December number of The Far Eastern Review. Mr. Carleton.

The greater development of the Ame rican trade in marine engines of all types in Hongkong and the territory rimary to it is a matter of educational propaganda. The economic value of amotor boats must be fully demonstrated to the Chinese and motor must be pro- duced that is reliable, simple to operate, and not too expensive. High finish is of secondary importance to reliability.

The need of educational propaganda is best evidenced by the experience of a calfrm, which some years ago ended- used to interest the fishing-junk iple to install motors. A number of thesa Ashermen were much impressed · With the ides and went so far as to order fem molors, but at the last moment es neelled the order, giving as their eason that it would result in kud since their fathers had never used autor power on their fishing junk. It therefore. this superstition, if ven be called that, which must.
