WHY WORRY?

So it is. We THY worry? The Ware over!

-have all heard that remark more than once, but there is much to "worry about yet. We're not out of the game simply because the Huns have laid down their guns. What you gave on Heather Day and at the Fair is surely not the limit of your sacrifice 1 There are thousands and thousands of brave men condemned to pass the rest of their lives in misery unless we rally to the aid of the great work of healing. Thanks to the Army and Navy, we we have had, and will continue to have a very coni- fortable time in Hongkong. It is our duty then to worry," "in order that the maimed and sick, the human wreckage of the great war of Liberty, may be restored. Every one of us here owes a great debt to the men who fought and bled in wara debt which we can never repay. Bat we can show our apprecia- tion by giving our last cent to the great work of mercy in which so many noble men and women are engaged at home. Money is urgently needed. Shall we grudge it now that the war is won? Never let it be said that our patriotism and honour petered out with the echo of the last shot. Don't say that you put every cent you bad into Heather Day and St. Andrew's For The War Boad Drawing is for the same cause and its success must be written down in the annals of the Colony's giving as another endeavour to show tangible appreciation of the brilliant achievements, on the battefield and on the North Sea, of the bravest boys on earth. THE INLUENCE OF THE WAR ON MALAYA.

A GRAPHIC ACCOUNT.

P

The British community in - Malaya wora naturally anxious sa to the fats of that "outpost of Empire" when the war broke out. Happily, however except for the deplorable mutiny at Singapore, life in Mainya has followed pretty much its usual couro, thanks largely to the wise action of the Govern

Thept,

Although it hart been expected for some days, when the nowe of the out- break of war came through to Malaya. a curious thrill ran through the British community. It was composed of varions almente relief from the strain of the uncertainty of the previoue week an intense feeling of patriotism; anxiety for the future of the Empire; fear of what the immeiliate fate of Malaya might be, and an indefinite feeling of restlessness and excitement were some of the features of it. ..

A complete stagnation of busineša caused the boads of commercial firms to crowd the Singapore Club in depressed groups; there was an insatiable thirst for news; and crepe of the most absurd ramonrs sprang up, gained credence and died away. Throughout this there was no panic; we put our trust in Providenss and the British Flest, and waited with more or loss patience for the development of events." Boma people would have been very glad to ace a British warship anchoring in the mads, but it was some little time before that occurred. Sir Edward 'Grey's apsech had an excellent affect, everyoma folt that whatever' bapposed we had justice on our side.

As we saw the French mnd British fags ever moving towards Paris, our hearts were somewhat troubled, but riost of us kopt brave faces. When the tar came, the relief of a British out- post in the midst of a large Asiatic community may be easily imagined and it must be remembered that in a country like Malaga, consisting of scattered eettlemente, where the British are in a very large minority, there is always the fear of riots and robberies if rice and opium become scarce. If your trade is stopped, and 1,000,000 coolies, little better than animals in many cases, are Bet loose, mad with hunger for food and

opium, it is easy to see that the

atrocities of the modern Hur might be. approached, if not equalled. Govern ment, however, scted promptly and effectively by offering to buy all tin and rubber at fair prices, and that source of danger was removed.

Naturally, the wily "Chinee" took exportunity of raising his prices, and milk went up to famine rates; but again prompt action on the part of the Government and of one of the milk companies soon put an end to that, Among the educated natives, also, there was a feeling of restlessness and excitement; the writer was in close personal contract with a body of well over a hundred of them, of all races and creeds, and one could feel that it was. difficult to get them to settle down to

Things wont on in this way for some months, and then, like the explosion of amine, came the Singapore Matiny. This is not the place either to inquire into its causes or to apportion blame: suffice it to say that, thooks to the. setion taken by the naval and military commanders on the spot, and bad leadership on the part of the mutincera the results were not nearly so serÍOUS, BE they might have been. Nor should the poor, misguided meu be blamed over- amch. Many expisted their crime with their lives at the time, and since then the regiment, it is understood, as redeemed ita name in battie. For a time however, there was a feeling of restless throughout the country, but itsoonfaded, and we fell back into our old routine, There has been much frothy talk over manpower, compulsory service, contri- butions to Imperial Funds, trade after the war, and similar subjects Thara has been a time of great prosperity. thoughout all Malaya, except for officiale.
