The above two regions—there may be others-evidently led to the exciting events, which occurred between 9.15 and o'clock in the morning in the vicinity of the Sins, Carter and Areane Reads. The Shanghai Tramway Company Ware the chief sufferers, damage being done to soven of their cara and also four trailers to the extent of over $1,200.
The mob of coulies is said to have numbered upwards of 500.
Wheelbarrow coolies on, Sinza Fond, carrying away garbage, were first intimi. dated, and were compelled to empty the contents of their barrows on to the tram- way track, thus preventing the tramcars from pussing up and down the road. the cars coming to a standstill, the rinkleaders of the mob, who were armed with huge bamboos, stones, and other weapons, entered the cars, turned out all the passengers and proceeded to emash every window of the cars,
The police from Sirzs station were promptly on the scene and while they are in the act of quelling these dis olders, the crowd in the Carter Road and Avenue Mond vicinity started to the cars running between Bubbling and Shanghai. The ears on this route especially thea: bound for Shanghai, were occupied by foreigners chiefly women and children he arrowly escaped being injured. The police in this vicinity were few in number, sad it was only with the assistance of a num ber of civilians that a very dangerous situation was overcome within a very short time.
