CHINA'S EXPORTS LAST YEAR.
The Report of the Statistical Secretary of the Chinese Customs, Administration on the trade of the country in 1917 has this to say regarding Exports :----
The advance made in the locat 97.60 manufacture of cotton goods in strik- ingly indicated by the following 3,004
figures, but it must be understood that the vast bulk of these goods are") ised in the country, and that the export figuren give no idea of the real Fvolume of the trade, Chey shirtings have risen from 260 "pieces in 1913 to 21,504 pieces in 1917; sheetings, from 2,104 to 38,808 pieces; drills, from 8422 to 38,001, pieces; and native fancy cloth, froni 299,148 to 490,533 pieces. With encourage- ment from the Government, there would be a vast development of this industry. Nearly all metals were exported in greater quantities. Anti- tony, regulus and erude, increased by 6 per cens., but the value. had declined considerably in consequence of the lifeulty of procuring fight! and because the European demand was being supplied from Bolivia and elsewhere. The greater part of the export took place varly in the year. Copper and all kinds of iron were wanted by Japan and were exported 13.25 in greater quantities, as were lead ore and tin, the chief demand for the 42.30 latter coming from America. Bean- 217.67 cake increased by nearly four million piculs, owing to the demand from Japan, where other fertilisers were Festce, and there were more orders
