SPOTTED FEYER.""
ESTERESTINŮ, FACTS ABOUT THE DISEASE.
Cerebro-spinal meningitis, so called! -because it is a disease of the membranes overing the brain, and commonly called ", spotted fover" because red spots fre- quently appear on the patient, now epidemic in Hongkong, is not a common disease in this part of the world, remarks theN.C. Daily News" although it is Common enough in Europe and especially in America.
When the disenso appears in epidemic form, which is at long intervals as a rule, the mortality percentage secins high.
er 30 per cent; bat in its ususi isolated appearance in the Home couns dries this percentage is much reduced, the disease becoming more violent when spidemic. When epidemics occur they are usually localized and are never widespread, according to the beat-known authorities.
„INCUBATION AND A SERUM. Although rerebrospinal meningitis is so well under tood that a curative scrum as been discovered, there is one im- portant factor that is not known, and that in the incubation period.

The disease is spread from paticnt CHINA
to patient by a microbe breathed into šči nowe, the microbe reaching the bin membrane through the CHESA
pastim How ng the organisms may in- abit the nose, especially I the patiens catarrhal affce- ja suffering from a mon, before thu diarase actually makes is presence known, is a matter as yet undetermined. Possibly the mi robes, once introduced into the nasal Pages by inhalation, may be latent for a week or ten days, or even longer; before the symptoms" suddenly and
pidly develope.
Dr. Flexner, of the Rockefeller In- #titute, New York, some year ago dis uvered a comative serum called anti- meningocverus, which accomplished won- aders in reversing the mortality per centage so that when patients are rested with this serum. which is in- ected into the apinal canal, the death Ente is reduced to a minimum. The Tiener seram is used in all countries
where
the disease is frequent. We understand that this serum ia being used in Hongkong-ED. C..] It saltogether unlikely that the cum could be secured from the Department of Health at Manila
This disease is not to be confused ith infantile paralysis, which also attacks spine and benin, of which there was a disastrous epidemic in America last year, although in Americs, where meringitis prevails to some extent at all mes, it more frequently attacks the young than the adults. When epidemic the percentage of mortality in paticnta below 15 years is averaged at 48 per went. In 1004 5 when, meningitis was epidemic in New York there were 3,500 enths out of $700 cases. Recent Amer can medical reports indicate a few cases in practically all sections of the country, isolated ones cropping up un- wiaxle expectedly withbat any apparent source of infection. In all probability the Mongkong disease is the same si that prevalent in America. the percentage

KYMITS OF THE DISEASE.
The progress of the disease is rapid; death coming in five or six days after development, sometimes so quickly a4 32 to 14 hours; if the patient is alive on the 10th or 12th day he will probably recover. The disease shows its presence suddenly, usually with severe bead- aches at first which rapidly get worse. Chilla are also commun, and vomiting and lover about the third day, uecom- stiff neck and pain, sleepiness panied and finally unconsciousness: these symp toms, as described by Sir William Usler, very rapidly increase in intensity.
The spotted "
typhus epidemic reported at Harbin is entirely distinct from the spotted fever" or cerebro- spinal meningitis of Hongkong, the fornier being simply typhoid fever.
