LORD LANSDOWNE ON THE BALKAN SITUATION.
HIS LORDSHIP'S STATEMENT CONTINUED.
||
LONDON, Oct. 20.
At the instarto of M.. Venczelos we undertook to provide a forca, to enable Greece to fulfil the Serbo-Greck Treaty; hence such troops as wore available wore sent to Salonika. It was a Stall force because only a small force could be collected. Fruice also sent her troops sinul- taneously. That a largersforce be prepared was suggested. These steps, no doubt incomplete, were taken with great promptitude, though after full deliberate consultation with military and naval advisers.
The British force at Salonika was thirteen thousand. This was regarded as a precursor to a larger force. The use whereto the latter would be put must depend on the situation when they arrived on the scene. The Anglo-French Governmente realised that when-further inforcements reached the Eastern Mediterranean" they would necessarily take careful stuck of the position.
Events which were moving most rapidly wore profoundly affected by Greece cat fulfilling her treaty engagements and the enemy's progress in Serbia
V
Lord Lansdowne concluded by saying that Frouch and British military and wival advisers were now conferring in regard to the situ tion. General Monro, who had arrived in the part of the world, had. been instructed to" report his opinion as soon as possible....
Lord Lansdowne gave his assurance that the Government would not act hurriedly on impulse but would take the best military advics at avery step.
LORD LONEBURN'S COMMENTS IN HOUSE OF LORDS.
In the House of Lords, Lord Loreburn asked whether the Gover ment navar und military advisors were satisfied, regarding the despatch of troops to Salonika that full provision had been made for their com munications and the supply to the meu of material. He pointed out the disappointiäents in the Dardanelles enterprise, and desired an assur- ance that the country would not suffer any great danger from unpre- paredness or indecision.
