ON THE WESTERN FRONT

GERMANS CHECKMATED AT EVERY POINT.

LONDON, Aug. § 5.45 p.m. The Germans, says a telegram from Paris, are showing considerable activity and are evidently desirous of keeping the French basy in the dif forent sections. All the German móvements have been easily repulsed. The Crowa Prince's army in Argonne has developed more intense hand-grenade actions supported by artillery. This was especially the case last night around Hill 413. A communique adds that the Germans even attempted to debouch, but were immediately checked by the French fire. On two occasions the szemy attacked us along the heights of the Meuse, but were defeated by gronades and artillery.

The Gerrona Press is very angry with Ramania, and declares her neatrality has been consistently malevolent. Her intervention on the side of the Quadruple Entente is certainly to be expected.

THE POPE AND PEACE.

LONDON, Aug. 7. 4:10 am. The "Daily Telegraph's" home correspondent states that the Pope is about to take a new step in favour of peace, invoking especially the co-operation of neutral countries.

THE FIGHTING IN POLAND.

Laspos, Aug. 6, 8,45 p.m. Further particulars, with regard to the capture of Warsaw, are given in to-night's Berlin communique, which gs that after the Russians had been expelled from the outer ant inner lines. of tortificutjens, without any damage being done to the city, they retreated to Pruga, a suburb on the right bank of the Vistula. Tremndens batsles, however, are still| raging to the north and south of the capitals, the Russian rearguns evidently attacking gallantly and fiercely. The Germans only make th vagnest elins, not mentioning nay cuptums.

RUSSIA'S, OFFENSIVE.

The Berlin communique Inconically records cavalry battles, at Cour land (one of the Baltic provinces), and hints at the investment of Novogetrgievsk. It admits Russian atticks on the Narew front and also in the south-eastern, theatre of operations,

Opinion of Russian Military Experts.

Loxnx, Aug! 6. 10.75; pan. Owing to the destruction of three. bridges at Warsaw the Germans are conironted with the task of crossing the Vistula, which here is 350 yards wile! The Russians still ocoupy the suburb of Pragu, on the right bank of the river.

Surprise is expressed in Petrograd at the German delay in occupying Warsaw. Some attribute this delay to the declining strength of the Ger man annies, but it is now also believed that the Germans did not desire to drive the Russians from the capital, but would have pre ferred to force them to fights there or to surround them. General co Hindenburg-had hoped to drive the Russian Narew army southward on to the top of the array opposing General yon Mackensen, but now the Germans may be planning a larger envelopment from the North.

The German versious of the Turco-Bulgarian entente, implying a kettlement of the Dedeagaich Railway question. is not confirmed, says a telegram from Sofia.
