BRILLIANT BRITISH INFANTRY ACTIONS

AT HOOGE

LONDON, JUG AL Reuter's correspondent at Headquarters states think the infantry fighting st Hooge was desperate in the extremum Back was the adpetuosity of the British that the enemy trenches were carried in a few minutes. None of the enemy's devices could check the khaki figures dashing forward in the grey light of the dawa. Numbers of Germans bolted and thas escaped; the remainder were bayonetted or captured. The demoralisation of the prisoners, mostly Wortem- bergs and Badeners, was complete. They dropped thair rifes aut prayed for mercy evidently expecting to be shot on the spot.

The British artillery preparation was almost perfect. Shells of all calibree were poured into the entanglements; but the men did not trouhlaabout Ebe wire the shella tore branches in the trenches and the British rushed througð like an avalanche. First went the Royal Fusiliers throwing bombs but at their very heals, in a glorious charge, were the infantry, prominent of which were the Liverpool boutdish. Traversing the zone plastered by German shells they toall the German socond line. None faltered,

Infantry fighting finished at dusk and the British established an immensely superior main line.. The German counter attacks were only half-hearted and the enemy made the usual signal of failure by a cannonade of gas shells.
