HONOURS FOR BRITISH NAVAL OFFICERS.

LONDON, April. 9.

The Press Rarena announces that the Order of Companion of the Bath has been awarded to Captain Kelly for chasing the "Goeben" and "Breslau' on the 6th and 7th August, The "Gooben" could have turned and aunt the "Glouenster" at any time, her was apparently deterred by the "Glow- cester's" baldness, which gave the impression that support was close at hand. This combination of audacity and restraint, along with unswerving attention to the principal military object of holding on to the Goeben," without tempting her too much, and in strict coaformity to orders constitutes a zaval episode which may be justly regarded as a modɛl,

GERMANY ON THE DEFENSIVE.

A NOTABLE GERMAN ADMISSION.

Lostos, April 0.

The semi-official Forth German Gazette publishes a wild article on the war which is supposed to emanate from a high military source and is avidently designed to allay the anxiety caused by the French advance in Argonne and the Vorges and the Russian advance in the Carpathians, It loudly proclaims that the Germans are prepared to meet the great offensive whenever it comes, and in our defensive we will deel a deadly blow to the aggressor, in cluding the British Empire, which is cracking in ali its joints."

This is noteworthy as the fire authoritative Gorman admission that Germany is on the defensive.

MAGNIFICENT, WORK BY FRENCH AIRMEN.

LONDON, April &

The French Eye-witness says that amidst the more glorious and mora effective deads of the Army at large the activities of the airman tave been temporarily in the background, but the fine weather and longer daylight have permitted a recrudescence of serial operations, of which the French have taken the fallest advantage. This is best illustrated by the record of one day's operations, when 45 reconnaissances and. 20 range corrections, besides numerous splendid raida, in which matty bombe and thousande of arrows were dropped on railway stations and encampments over a wide front, both day and night, were carried out. In addition to these duties the airmen have engaged in numerous duels with German aviators, many of whom have ben brought to the ground. The supremacy of the French aviators over the

It was necessary for every 2009 to have an asserably hall; and now that so many troops were coming into exist ence in Hongkong, the matter was one" of even greater urgency. Steps were taken a short time ago to render ini, question, adil a son of about $1,600 was collected. Some of the money, however, was given on conditions which prevented it being applied to this purpose. He had considered the advisability of raising a Joen to cover the cost of a ball, the in- terest to be covered by the Scouta' sub- scriptions, arul, the principal by concerts, etc. but this project had to be abarkion: ed, as the salesetiptions were screwhat | Irregular. With the cordial awistance of Major McHardy he approached the “inili. tury authorities, and was offered by Col. Duker Brown E., a piece of gravad w the back of the detention barracki, að the nominal rent of $3 per annum, sub- ject to the stipulation that if judy BIAY time the ground was ueaded for military purposes the Scouts would have to give it up. This, however, was annalill contingency, and they had already held camp there.
