A moet desperate struggle ensued, British and French toming to the support of the Indians, and re-establishing practically the old lines, on the evening of the 22nd December.

The Field-Barshal says that the Indias. troops have fought with the utmost steadfastness and gallantry whenever called upon.

Abuorreally bad weather precluded active operations for the first three weeks in Jananty. Then, until the end of the month, there was heavy hand-to- band fighting in the vicinity of Bethune and Givenchy, The Germans penetrated our lines in some places, but were eventually repulsed everywhere with the heaviest loss.

The Commander of the First Division describes the British artillery fire · 29′′ splendid and of absolute precision.

The Field Marshal aya'that the Corps Commanders are unstinted in praisa of the Territorials and Yeomanry forming part of nearly all the Brigades in the first line, and declares that the troopa in France have been subjected to the Beverent strain possible. Nevertheless the spirit remained high and confident. Their health was excellent, and the appearance of tho men, if somewhat war- worn, was nevertheless soldier-like and splendid.

Sir John French particularly mentions the fine appearance of the 27th and 28th Divisions composed principally of battalions from Tadia, and including Princess Patricia's Regiment of Canadians, and also commende highly the work of the Army Medical Corps, the splendid sanitation, and the excellent services, of the Royal Engineers.

The Commander-in-Chief concludes: I bave no reason to modify in any material degree the views expressed in my last despatch of the general situa tion." Sir John French again gratefully acknowledges the valuable help and aupport of Generals Foch, Dirbel, and Maudlay, of the French Army.
