CONSECRATION OF A BISHOP FOR NORTH CHINA.
At Canterbury, on the Feast of the Circumcisica, the Archbishop of Canter- bury othcerated the Bav. Francis Lesh. ington Norrs, 11.D., to the third Bishop Ics North Chifia, and the Vinerable Ed- ward Dumets Shaw, M.A,, tio Archdea- eon of Buckingham, as Bishop-Sufragan of Buckinghamh. The co-colscerniom were the Bishops of St. Albaris, Oxford, Gloucester, Dover, Atlabuses, Stafford, Carfe, and Knight. The linking of Can- terbury and China in this instance is excoolingly opportune, in via d tho fact that läst year Mishop Scott, 'who bui just reigned, as senior Bishop in China, posided over the find aprol of the Chung Hun Shon Kung Hui, or Chinese Holy „Cathodic Church," to which in dua time (and in China thilags go very rapidiy now) will be devolved the rights of shoon- ing and consecrating its own Bishop. Already Chinese Cleistînes' who are ex-| ercising zo little nor unworthy induence upon Chinesa politics, are evincing keen interest, in their own autonomy in raki- gious matters, which the Archbishop has been in turn most ready to recognise. Although upon him alone devolves tho acturi appointment, the Archbishop ro- ferred the nomination in the first place to the bishope in China, and again the name which the bishops had unanimously propond to the members, Chines in European, laity and dericul, of the North China Diocesan Conference, with the same result. Dr. Norris was presented by the Bishop of 81. Albans and the Bishop of Glageoster, The sermon was preached by Archdeacon Fearon, of Winchester, from Isaia vi. 8, who made graceful reference to the influence exercised by Dr. Neris during the calamities of 1900 and 1908.
An interesting link with the past his- tory of the diocese was the presence in the prosusion as one of the chaplains of the Rev. F. R. Mickall, the Restor of Ash, near Doves, who was one of the first S.P.G. missimorice in Peking in 1863, in that happy but brief period when z both the great societies, C.M.S. now
S.P.G., were working together in the city under the same bishop.
