Informer Tricked Out of $3,700.
A smart trick was played upon a polica spy on Wednesday and in ense- quenco the police department is $3,700 the poorer. The story of the ruse was told in the Polico Court yesterday during the hearing of a charge of dealing in arms and ammunition preferred against Two Chinese.
It appears from the story unfolded to Mr. Wood that Inspector Gordon gavo two police informera certain instructions in consequence of which they entered into negotiations for the purchase of suns and ammunition. After the usual pro- liminaries e partics arrange to meet on the Prays, whence they rowed cui to the steamship Monteagle in campaña. During the trip out the informers and the salesmen haggled about the price to be paid for arms and it was eventually agreed to everybody's satisfaction that Mausers should be bought at $78 each Five bags con- and Brownings at 43.
were lowered by a 1117 taining are alleged to be one of the defendants, from the ship to the sampan, and during this proceding the first deferidant asked to bo shown some money as a guarantee of good faith. One of the infermers took from his peckel $3,700 lone to him for the purposes of the caso by the police, and handed it to the first defendant. It is alleged that this man thrust is, as he tought, unseen, into a small bag which be carried and ho then shouted out that ho had lost the money. It is alleged that while the informers" attention was thus distracted the bug of money wa
· hauled up the ship's deck by one of the defendants in sight of the informers, and that when they aventually were abla to get aheard it had disappeared. The two defendants were arrested and were remanded ull to-morrow 11 when Mr. Leo. D'Almada e Castro will defend them.

The police objected to bail being granted, but Mr. Wood slowed dodend- nts out on their depositing $2,000 mach.
WOMEN AND WIVES,
Many people in India have commented en the curious nomenclature which la adopted in Army returns by which female pasengers on troopships become classified na officers' ladies, sergeanta' wives and soldiers wonen. Someone has evidently been complaining in Calcutta that the Jass 1era is disrespect to the wives of mom in the ranks. A correspondent of s contemporary, who signs herself "An Officer's Wife," amusingly reminda un that in farmer days the legend ran thus: -The colonel's lady, the major'e wito and the subaltern's, “pour thing." She suggests that the customary use of the present terme rigs be reversed, so that the men's wives should be kaown na ladies and the officers' wives be dos
ribed by the very ancient and he toure able word" women. But would it not be simpler to treat then all like and call then all wives, which in equally honourable and ancient ? {Tha Englishman.
